Volchenkov close to returning, but will likely miss Thursday's game in Montreal

Anton Volchenkov has missed four games thus far this season with a broken nose and a stiff neck. He was all but ready to play last Monday against Pittsburgh, but was unable to due to a stiff neck which started to bother him. Right now it is only a stiff neck that is preventing him from practicing and playing, not the nose.

He will visit another doctor tomorrow to get a clear understanding when he will be able to return, but he is not expected to practice due to the visit. The Devils usually do not like players returning from injury to play a game unless they have at least two full practice sessions with contacts. Its possible Volchenkov may skate on his own, unless he is cleared by doctors for light or full contact practice. So, based on this information it is likely he will return Saturday night against Buffalo or Sunday at the Rangers. But, the likelihood is that he will come back next Wednesday at San Jose when the Devils go on their 6 game Western Conference road trip, which might be a good team bonding experience.
