The Kovalchuk benching proved to be a mistake considering he was the Devils lone goal scorer tonight in a 3-1 loss to the Rangers at Madison Square Garden. Michal Rozsival, Ryan Callahan and Brandon Dubinsky had the Ranger goals. Henrik Lundqvist was the star of the game not allowing any chances to the Devils and stopping 27 out of 28 shots.
The 1st Ranger goal was a fluke, basically the Rangers fired a hard shot of Brodeur's shoulder and it stung Marty, but the bounce came to Rozsival and he fired the puck past Marty. The second goal was a Power Play goal which was deflected en route by Callahan and Brandon Dubinsky sealed the victory with an empty netter. The Devils seemed to be energized after the Kovalchuk goal, but a late Josefson penalty slowed things down.
The Devils have 5 games remaining on a trip, with 4 in the Pacific Timezone, so let's hope they can bond as a team on the trip. I say winning 3 or 4 out of the 5 could prove to be a successful trip coming home. Their next home game is Friday November 5 against the same Rangers, so they will be looking for their first home win against Henrik Lundqvist. Their top priority will be trying to find their offense which is struggling mightily right now. A 2-6-1 record through nine games is unacceptable, but it could have been worse. Right now the question is how safe is John MacLean's job? I will leave it at that.
