Paul Martin was definitely a huge loss to the Devils defensive corps even though they were able to pick up Henrik Tallinder and Anton Volchenkov in Free Agency. What made it a bigger loss was the fact that he chose to sign with arch division rival Pittsburgh Penguins following the footsteps of former Devil Mike Rupp, who went to the Pens last off-season. Martin is not the only high profile Devil to sign with division rivals. Bobby Holik, Scott Gomez, and Bruce Drive all went to the Rangers across the Hudson for more money.
But tonight, the Flyers spoiled Paul Martin's Penguins debut and their unveiling of their new arena, Consol Energy Center. Paul Martin coughed up the puck to Flyers forward Claude Giroux, which lead to Giroux's shorthanded goal. It was a tough loss for the Penguins in general as Sidney Crosby was kept off the score sheet. I will say the new building looks incredible as it brings a terrific fan atmosphere closer to the action. The Pens will definitely do some nice things in this building. The Devils also lost their first ever game at the Prudential Center in Newark.
