For now the Devils and their fans can breathe a sigh of relief as Ilya Kovalchuk scored early in overtime to give the Devils a 1-0 win against the Buffalo Sabres at HSBC Arena in Buffalo. The victory was the 111th career shutout for Marty Brodeur who bested his friend but sometimes nemesis Ryan Miller.
It was a complete effort today by the Devils out-shooting the Sabres 15-1 in the first period. But, the game felt like a goaltending duel much like a pitchers dual in Baseball between two very good aces. The Devils and Sabres have a lot of goaltending duals between Miller and Brodeur as both bring out the best in each other. Miller bested Brodeur in the Olympics last year leaving Roberto Luongo to win the gold against him.
Notes: Brian Rolston will be place on LTIR with a sports hernia and will miss 4-6 weeks, so tough going for him. The Devils are expected to reach out to Albany and recall a player or two to fill out their roster and it will likely be Mattias Tedenby, Jacob Josefson or Adam Henrique. LeBlond is a possibility, but he will have to clear re-entry waiver first.
