Parise has lower body injury, to be examined by team doctors on Monday, (Injury happened in August)

Zach Parise today told reporters he has a lower body injury and flew back to New Jersey with GM Lou Lamoriello after the game last night on a commercial flight. But here is is the shocking part, the injury actually occurred back in August while training for the upcoming season, so this explains his early season struggles and yesterdays awkward fall aggravated the injury. He will be examined by a doctor tomorrow to determine the extent of the injury, but its safe to say he won't be back before Friday's game against the Rangers.

This injury is totally out of the blue especially at a time like this, but Parise being the warrior that he is decided to play through it. Parise hopes he will not miss significant time, but I think it will be at least a month as a few weeks rest will likely be needed. The Devils will not practice today and it is not yet known whether anyone was called up from Albany. Tim Sestito is likely to be inserted back into the line-up.

-------

Here are the Devils injuries thus far this season:

Bryce Salvador (Concussion)
Brian Rolston (Sports Hernia)
Anton Volchenkov (Broken Nose-Stiff Neck)
Mark Fraser (Broken Hand)
Matthew Corrente (Fractured Hand)
Jacob Josefson (Wrist)
Zach Parise (Lower Body)

Banged Up Devils:

Travis Zajac, Jason Arnott, Tim Sestito

Devils lose Parise, game to Kings 3-1. (Offense, Power Play, Marty continue to struggle)

After an emotional win against Anaheim on Friday night, the Devils were unable to get a winning streak going in Los Angeles losing 3-1 to the Kings. The Kings got goals from Justin Williams, Michal Handzus, and Jarret Stoll while Matt Taormina scored for the Devils. The Devils power play, offense and Marty Brodeur continued to struggle this early in the season. Jonathan Quick was the story tonight turning away 39 out of 40 Devils shots. So, the story of this early season is that the Devils have been making goaltenders look amazing like Craig Anderson, Tim Thomas and Henrik Lundqvist.

The Power play went 0-2 tonight and the Devils have only 18 goals as a team this year, which is worst in the NHL. A very unacceptable start for a first class organization. They are now 3-8-1, and what sums everything up is injuries, ineffective play and salary cap problem and tonight's injury to Zach Parise sums the whole early season up for the Devils. Parise did not play in the third period after falling awkwardly late in the second appearing to favor his groin or knee. However, team officials are saying its a lower body injury. Parise will fly back to New Jersey to be evaluated by team doctors to determine extent of injury. He will not play in Vancouver and will likely miss Wednesday's game in Chicago. Based on what I saw, it seems that it could be a tweak in the knee and the Devils are erring on the side of caution since it is still early on in the season. Now the question is, who do the Devils call up? It is possible that it could be Mattias Tedenby this time, but Vladimir Zharkov is the likely favorite.

The Parise injury kind of gave me a thought, if the Devils are having so much problems scoring with Parise and Kovalchuk on the same team, it cannot possibly get any worse. Maybe they can find each other and feed off everyone and find a way to overcome this disastrous start so that when Parise does come back, everyone will have already bonded. Enough of this losing.

Report: Josefson returns to New Jersey, Brad Mills recalled, Volchenkov placed on short-term IR

According to Rich Chere of the Star Ledger, center Jacob Josefson has returned to New Jersey with a sore hand, which means he will be out tonight against the Kings and Monday against Vancouver. Josefson sustained the injury in Wednesdays loss to the Sharks. He said his hand felt better yesterday, but I guess the Devils do not want to take any chances with him.

The Devils have recalled center Brad Mills from Albany on emergency basis. Apparently word is that one Devils forward might not be able to play presumably Jason Arnott or Tim Sestito. Travis Zajac is also sore, but notified Chere that he will play.

-----

Anton Volchenkov was placed on short-term IR retro-active to October 9th. This means he can be activated tomorrow. He has to miss at least 7 games unlike LTIR, which is 10 or 24 days. Volchenkov is likely to join the team in Chicago on Wednesday.

Fox has returned to Cablevision customers

One day after reaching a re-transmission agreement with Dish Network, Fox has finally ended a two week stalemate with Cablevision and returned its programming to the carrier's 3 million customers in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. It is believed that Cablevision agreed to the hefty Fox demands even though terms of the deal were not released. For the past two weeks Cablevision customers have seen various designed prompts and heard two voices on the Fox channel and the other Fox Networks telling them of News Corps Greed. The Networks affected by this dispute were FOX, FOX Business, MyNetwork TV or My9 and My17 in Philly, Fox Philadelphia and NatGeo Wild or National Geographic Wild. My9 airs a little over 20 Yankees games a year and occasionally a Nets game.

The two week stalemate ended minutes before the first pitch of Game 3 of the World Series. This deal means that Cablevision customers will not have to flock to bars and other people's houses with different cable and satellite providers to watch their favorite Fox Programming like the World Series or most notably tomorrows Jets vs Packers game. Other Fox Programming includes hit TV shows like House, Glee, Bones, Lie To Me, Hell's Kitchen, Kitchen Nightmares and Fringe. Fox also suspended its shows from Cablevision's Internet Customers, meaning they were unable to view its programming on sites like Fox.com and Hulu. Though some programming eventually made it to Hulu and Fox.com. Fox will also broadcast this years Super Bowl, but everyone knew that an agreement would be reached very soon despite the impasse they had.

It was widely believed that this feud was going to help Democrats in this Tuesdays midterm elections. Also, many thought this was a political stunt by both companies. I believe that in these types of disputes, the Cable provider is usually the one to blame since its customers lose. I am a Cablevision customer, but I was not worried about the dispute as I could care less if I go to a bar or miss a show. Next order of business for Cablevision is to finally get the NFL Network. It is believed the two sides could be in the verge of a breakthrough in the dispute. Enjoy the Jets game tomorrow.

Kovalchuk is spotlight of Kings-Devils matchup tonight

The Devils are hoping to win two in a row for the first time this season when they visit the Kings tonight at Staples Center in Los Angeles. After an emotional 2-1 win in Anaheim last night, the Devils face a tough test in Los Angeles, a team much like the struggling Devils are considered to be one of their conferences elite. Marty Brodeur will start in net again for the Devils and no word on who the Kings will go with, but both goalies are very strong in Jonathan Quick and Jonathan Bernier.

Though former Kings great Mattias Norstrom is in the biggest spotlight tonight with the team honoring him tonight, Ilya Kovalchuk will take center stage when the puck drops. Kovalchuk reportedly turned down numerous lucrative offers from the Kings this summer to return to New Jersey. The Kings even flew him and his family along with his agent Jay Grossman to Los Angeles to host him and give him and his entourage a tour of the city and all the amenities that he will have access to if he were to become an LA King. It will be another emotional game for the Devils tonight as well as the Kings.

Devils overcome adversity to edge Ducks 2-1, Power Play still struggling, Devils get secondary scoring

The Devils finally got a type of victory they needed where they had to overcome adversity. Yes, adversity happened when Jason Blake scored the first goal of the game for Anaheim in the 2nd period, but the Devils fought through and Jamie Langenbrunner about 2.5 minutes later tied it up at one. In the 3rd period, it was a complete defensive effort for both teams as there was a 4 minute period with no shots by either team. But, Rookie Alexander Vasyunov, who filled in for Josefson stole a puck in the neutral zone and passed it to Patrik Elias for a one-timer-goal. Marty Brodeur was stellar in net despite facing torpedo like shots up high from a distance, making 27 saves. Hiller played sensational in the loss for Anaheim.

Brodeur will start again tomorrow in Los Angeles, so no Johan Hedberg on this trip likely. The Devils dominated the first period before both teams settled down for the second and third. The Power Play was 0-4 tonight and continued to struggle and almost cost the Devils the game, when the Devils after 4 on 4 play failed to successfully kill off a Ducks power play which led the Blake goal. The most important element tonight was that other Devils that had to show up like Elias and Langenbrunner scored the goals. Secondary scoring is in effect for now.

Kovalchuk played very well tonight after being unnoticeable in San Jose. He was paired with Elias and Vasyunov, so the Russian connection helped him. Vasyunov at times looked like Kovy with the puck. In my opinion Parise does look a bit banged up, so hopefully he heals fast and gets back on the scoring track.

------

Volchenkov will not play in Vancouver on Monday, but Chicago on Wednesday is a possibility, but it is a long shot.

------

Rich Chere of the Newark Star Ledger is reporting that plans are in the works to retire former Devils great Defenseman Scott Niedermayer's number 27 later in the season. GM Lou Lamoriello said nothing is final, but that plans are in the early stages. Niedermayer won 3 Stanley Cups in New Jersey and 1 in Anaheim in 2007 as their captain. He was part of the core 4 defensemen on the team along with Scott Stevens, Ken Daneyko and Brian Rafalski. I think the ceremony will probably take place sometime in March on a Friday or Saturday evening game.

Brodeur to start against Ducks, Josefson to sit out with sore hand

It will be Marty Brodeur in net tonight at 10 PM ET, when the Devils take on the Ducks in Anaheim hoping to get a winning streak going and break out of their disastrous slump. Rookie Jacob Josefson will sit out with a sore wrist and hand after being slashed on by a Sharks player on Wednesday. He says the hand is better today than yesterday and is hopeful of playing tomorrow. The Devils have places defenseman Mark Fraser on IR retroactive to his last game played against Buffalo on October 13th.

Devils GM Lou Lamoriello is en route to California at this moment and there is no word if Anton Volchenkov is with him or still skating in New Jersey. Volchenkov will not play tonight or tomorrow and its unlikely he will play in Vancouver on Monday, but who knows? Volchenkov is likely to return next Friday against the Rangers at Prudential Center, but my gut tells me with the 5 days off after the Ranger game, the Devils might hold him out until then. So, Wednesday November 10 against Buffalo is a good target for him and maybe some other injured players. As I mentioned, the Devils are getting closer to the time when they have to seriously consider making trades to solve their salary cap issues with Bryce Salvador and Brian Rolston getting closer to rejoining the team.

John MacLean's job is safe for now

Those fans and hockey analysts calling for Devils GM Lou Lamoriello to fire rookie coach John MacLean 10 games into the season will have to wait for now. Lamoriello has not even had a thought of relieving MacLean of his duties and feels it is the players responsibility to perform better. Simply put what I've been saying week after week in this young season, the Devils best players have to score and be their best players. Guys like Arnott, Elias, Zubrus, Zajac and Clarkson have to put the puck in the net. Jacob Josefson hopefully could join the fray. They cannot rely on Parise and Kovalchuk for their offensive production and instead do the job themselves. Secondary scoring is an important resource in this league. And the fourth line has to also find ways to chip in offensively. The Defense also has to shoot the puck a little bit more. Hopefully, the Devils can find a way out of this crisis very soon, and by soon I mean start in Anaheim tomorrow. Otherwise, Lou will have to strongly consider a shake-up in the organization. But for now, MacLean is the Head Coach.

It turns out that Ken Hitchcock did not attend last nights Nets game at "The Rock." There was some speculation that he was meeting with Lou Lamoriello about the possibility of replacing John MacLean if he were fired. Hitchcock was one of the Devils coaching candidates this past summer before they decided on MacLean. So if MacLean does get the axe, Hitchcock is likely the front runner to replace him.

Volchenkov will not join team in California, Parise contract talks unlikely until salary cap problems are resolved

If Anton Volchenkov is going to play on this road trip, his best bet will be next Wednesday night in Chicago. Lou Lamoriello told reporters this morning that he is progressing and is very close to returning. Vancouver looks out of question unless he boards a separate charter tomorrow night to meet up with the team there. So, the best likelihood is next Friday at home against the NY Rangers, though after that the Devils do not play again until the following Wednesday November 10th against Buffalo at home. It would not surprise me if the Devils hold him out until then to give him quality practice time. Usually, the Devils prefer a player coming back from injury to have at least two full contact practices.

-----

Brian Rolston continues to skate on his own lightly and work out off the ice. The question now is who will finally be that salary cap casualty for the Devils. When Bruce Salvador is also cleared to return, someone will have to be traded. Once the Devils are 100% healthy with the exception of Anssi Salmela and their salary cap problems are taken care off, it is very likely that Lou Lamoriello will conduct contract extension talks with Zach Parise who is set to become a restricted free agent this Summer of 2011 and an unrestricted in Summer 2012. Parise and Kovalchuk much like Crosby and Malkin in Pittsburgh along with Toews and Kane in Chicago are the Devils future and present. But for now the focus for the Devils must be to dig out this massive early season slump. It seems as if tomorrow's game in Anaheim, which will be very tough is a must win. There is no word on who will start in net for the Devils.

Corrente is latest Devil injured, Vasyunov, Eckford called up

Just when you think the Devils struggling defense this young season could not get any worse, it did. Matt Corrente is the latest Devils player to get injured. According to Tom Gulitti and Rich Chere of the Bergen Record and Star Ledger respectively, Corrente suffered a broken hand possibly in the fight against Ryane Clowe of San Jose and no timetable was given for how much he is going to miss. The Devils recalled defenseman Tyler Eckford and forward Alexander Vasyunov from Albany to join the team on the trip. Eckford is likely to play in Anaheim tomorrow since Volchenkov will not play tomorrow like Lamoriello said. Vasyunov might play if MacLean chooses to sit someone.

Corrente getting hurt is a big hot for the Devils struggling defense, but on the bright side Eckford is more of a puck moving defenseman and can play the power play. He appeared in the AHL All Star Game back in 2009, so we will see how he fits in. It is not yet known whether GM Lou Lamoriello or Anton Volchenkov have met up with the team in California, but with the call ups, it seems that Lou could fly out with them and possibly Anton sometime today.

------

Interestingly Tom Gulitti of the Record spoke with former Devils Left Wing Jay Pandolfo. Pandolfo is currently skating in Massachusetts with ex-Islander Shawn Bates both hoping to get a contract from an NHL team. Pandolfo also believes the Devils will turn things around and that maybe they prefer a strong finish rather than a hot start. The previous two seasons, the Devils had hot starts, but faltered down the stretch and could not get anything done in the playoffs.

Devils eaten by Sharks 5-2 in San Jose (Sharks big 3 shines)

As many of you can recall, I said the Devils have to win at least 3 games on this 5 game trip to feel good about themselves. Well, the task just got much harder as they were picked apart by the Sharks big 3 of Marleau, Thornton and Heatley. Thornton had a hat trick and Marleau and Heatley had a goal each. The Devils got goals from David Clarkson on a lucky bounce of the boards and Andy Greene on the Power Play. There were two fluke goals today of the boards, one that could have turned the game around for the Devils and one that sealed the game for the Sharks. The Devils did what they do best this season so far, play very well in the first 10 minutes and then completely fall apart.

Their 2-7-1 start is there worst since early 1980s when they started 1-9-0 through the first ten games. They were 3-6-1 in 2007-2008, but managed to dig out of it ultimately finishing 4th in the East. I will say one thing though, I am concerned for the Devils, but I have to keep my self-esteem very high and not panic. This start could be the best or worst thing that could happen to this Devils team, they need to just score goals and find secondary scoring like I have been saying for weeks now other wise this will go free falling fast. Marty Brodeur played very well despite giving up 5 and made 34 saves. Nittymaki made 27 saves on 29 shots. The Devils cored their first road power play goal this year, but it still continues to struggle only going 1-5 tonight.

-----

The Devils will no face Anaheim on Friday and Los Angeles on Saturday, so winning both of those is very crucial to them. There is no word if Volchenkov will join the team, but he will not play on Friday in Anaheim. Saturday is a possibility, but Monday in Vancouver is the likely scenario.

Devils get set to face Sharks tonight in San Jose

The Devils are opening up a crucial five game western conference road trip tonight in San Jose which could very well likely decide how their season will unfold. Tonight's game as every game is a must win, but especially tonight. Though San Jose has been a Western Conference powerhouse in the past few years, the Devils cannot be intimidated by it. This trip could not come at a better time for the team since this could be a perfect bonding experience.

------

Antero Nittymaki will start in net for San Jose and Marty Brodeur for the Devils. Anton Volchenkov and Lou Lamoriello are not in HP Pavilion in San Jose, but might meet up with team in Anaheim. Volchenkov will not play tonight or in Anaheim on Friday, but might return sometime on the trip. Saturday in Los Angeles is a long shot, so Vancouver on Monday is the more realistic target. It will be very interesting to see what type of reception Kovalchuk gets in Los Angeles on Saturday since he turned down a lucrative offer from them this past summer to return to the Devils. As I said the Devils must win 3 games on this trip to boost their confidence.

Devils must win at least 3 games on this Western Trip to start turning things around

Sure, the Devils would love to win all the games on this trip to inject some positive energy into their team, but it will be difficult. I say if they can win at least 3 games on this trip, it would be a success and it should get things going for them. They are playing 3 games in California, 1 in Canada, and against defending champion Blackhawks.

I say that they at least would want to get a point in San Jose. It will be tough, but I think they can go into their building and win. The Devils have struggled in Anaheim in recent visits and have not won their since January 2003, but have had some success at Staples Center in Los Angeles. Vancouver has been extremely unfriendly to the Devils, though they did pull out a victory their in January 2009 and Marty would love to best his friend and rival Roberto Luongo. And then there is Chicago, the defending champions. Former Devils captain Scott Stevens always hated losing against the defending champions as he was when the Devils walked into Detroit in December 2002 and lost in overtime. Detroit won the Cup in June 2002, and Stevens was unsatisfying to leave Motown with a point, something most teams would be proud off. The Devils played better than the Red Wings in that game. So, Chicago is not any different. There is a lot of pressure on the Devils on this trip, but they know that the margin for error on this trip is zero to none.

-----

As I mentioned defenseman Anton Volchenkov will likely rejoin the team somewhere on the Western Trip, which will be a huge boost for the Devils since he is one of the best defensive defenseman in the game. Lou Lamoriello did say he will not play in San Jose tomorrow or Anaheim on Friday. This seems to be an indication that he will likely practice with the team on Thursday and Los Angeles is a possibility, but the likely target is Monday in Vancouver. It seems that John MacLean's job is not in jeopardy yet, but if the team continues to struggle by mid-late November, some jobs on the team will be in jeopardy.

Volchenkov might join team at some point on road trip

Devils Defenseman Anton Volchenkov did not fly with the team to San Jose, but he has been skating the past two days at Prudential Center and according to GM Lou Lamoriello he looks good. It was not his broken nose that prevented him from playing and practicing, but it was a stiff neck, so probably a pinch nerve. Lamoriello said that he might accompany him to San Jose, but he will not play. It looks like he might likely return next Monday in Vancouver.

Winger Brian Rolston has started light skating, but he remains out for his 4-6 week time frame. Also, defenseman Bryce Salvador has not been cleared to even exercise as he recovers from his concussion, so he has no timetable for return. Mark Fraser cannot work out for three weeks after surgery, so he remains off-ice. The Devils will practice in San Jose at 2 PM ET.

Devils must put any personal issues aside and play Devils Hockey

Ever since last years resting of team captain Jamie Langenbrunner, which some people in the media describe as a benching actually, the Devils have never been the same. It seems that some players do not like each other off the ice and that is affecting their game on the ice. This has to stop and they have to snap out of their fractured mental state and play Devils Hockey. Right now they are playing pussy hockey and I am pretty sure the 12-70 Nets from 2009-2010 would have more passion then the Devils.

They just have to compete defensively and go to the net in the offensive zone. Systems are changing year after year and positioning is becoming more of a key. The Devils were once one of the best fore-checking teams in the league, but they are not forcing turnovers in the opponents defensive zone. Enough is Enough, drop any personal off ice issues and start playing Devils Hockey.

Kovalchuk reportedly benched for missing team meeting

According to Bob McKenzie of TSN in Canada, Ilya Kovalchuk reportedly missed a team meeting on Saturday morning before their game against Buffalo. It was after that, where coach MacLean called him in and decided to scratch him from the line-up. While I have no confirmation of that, it would have been nice if the Devils explained the reasoning sooner. Kovalchuk had the lone Devils goal in last nights loss to the NY Rangers. If that was the reason, then the Devils do need to healthy scratch a player to send a message to the team that their slow start is unacceptable.

Devils must make best of upcoming road trip

If the Devils are going to get out of the major early season funk, they will have to do it on this Western Conference Road Trip. They will play all three California teams, the Vancouver Canucks and defending champion Chicago Blackhawks. Certain players like Patrik Elias, Jason Arnott, Dainius Zubrus, David Clarkson and team captain Jamie Langenbrunner have to step up offensively, which so far is being run by Zach Parise and Ilya Kovalchuk.

Most Devils probably cannot wait til the start of November, a month which will likely make or break the Devils. If they can win 3 or 4 of these games, I think they will go on a roll and reestablish their dominance in the Eastern Conference just in time to get players back from injury. Its very likely that Lou Lamoriello will have to make a trade in November once players like Brian Rolston and Bryce Salvador are ready to return from injury to clear up cap space. For now Devils fans should not panic, because I know if the Devils can break out offensively, it will be a good season. I think they are close. The biggest key for me is to have the Devils win a game where they trail by a goal or two, its these types of wins from which the team can gain confidence to overcome adversity.

Lamoriello defends Kovalchuk benching, Volchenkov to remain in NJ

It seems that MacLean did consult GM Lou Lamoriello about benching Kovalchuk before Saturday's game against Buffalo. Lamoriello yesterday broke his silence and defended the move after the Devil 3-1 loss to Rangers. While we may never get a clear reason as to why he was benched, yesterdays game could have been an example. Kovalchuk also said that it was an internal matter only going as far as to say it was rest. But, it clearly was not rest, it was probably to send a message to other to start playing their game. If the Devils do not start some sort of a winning streak, it may turn out to be a long season for a team of this high caliber. It seems a lot of the Devils veteran players are not being vocal enough or passionate enough. Players not named Parise and Kovalchuk although they have to better their play have to provide offense. Guys like Elias, Clarkson, Zubrus, Langenbrunner, and so far there a re no signs that they look like they are going to score. This trip will be a good team bonding experience before returning home on November 5th against the Rangers. I say out of the 5 games winning 3 or 4 would be a successful trip.

-----

Defenseman Anton Volchenkov will not accompany the team out west. He is working out off the ice and should begin skating by weeks end. The Devils might call up a few players from Albany to travel with team, since they only have 20 healthy players. So, its very likely Volchenkov will return on the November 5th game against the Rangers though right now the goal is probably November 10th against Buffalo since there is a long lay off before then. It seems the Devils want him to be 100%, but I certainly did not expect him to be out for this much. There is a slim chance he could play against Chicago on November 3rd next Wednesday.

Devils offense continues to sleep in 3-1 loss to Rangers

The Kovalchuk benching proved to be a mistake considering he was the Devils lone goal scorer tonight in a 3-1 loss to the Rangers at Madison Square Garden. Michal Rozsival, Ryan Callahan and Brandon Dubinsky had the Ranger goals. Henrik Lundqvist was the star of the game not allowing any chances to the Devils and stopping 27 out of 28 shots.

The 1st Ranger goal was a fluke, basically the Rangers fired a hard shot of Brodeur's shoulder and it stung Marty, but the bounce came to Rozsival and he fired the puck past Marty. The second goal was a Power Play goal which was deflected en route by Callahan and Brandon Dubinsky sealed the victory with an empty netter. The Devils seemed to be energized after the Kovalchuk goal, but a late Josefson penalty slowed things down.

The Devils have 5 games remaining on a trip, with 4 in the Pacific Timezone, so let's hope they can bond as a team on the trip. I say winning 3 or 4 out of the 5 could prove to be a successful trip coming home. Their next home game is Friday November 5 against the same Rangers, so they will be looking for their first home win against Henrik Lundqvist. Their top priority will be trying to find their offense which is struggling mightily right now. A 2-6-1 record through nine games is unacceptable, but it could have been worse. Right now the question is how safe is John MacLean's job? I will leave it at that.

Kovalchuk is in line-up against Rangers

For now it appears as if Ilya Kovalchuk is playing tonight against the Rangers. Ilya would not however discuss the specifics of last nights benching against Buffalo. So, for now Devils fans can breathe somewhat of a sigh of relief. The Rangers will go with Henrik Lundqvist in net tonight and Matt Gilroy and Mike Sauer are the 3rd defensive paring. Jeremy Williams will likely play in place of Todd White.

We will see if last night's scratching will have an effect on the rest of the Devils team, which was a mess against Buffalo. Still regardless of the result tonight or the Devils problems this season thus far, there will still be many questions about last nights surprise scratching of Ilya Kovalchuk. Most of these questions will probably never be answered unless someone opens up about it. Based on everything I have heard thus far, Lou Lamoriello had a little input into MacLean's decision last night.

Devils to face Rangers at MSG tonight, no word on Kovalchuk yet

With about 6 hours to go until puck drop at Madison Square Garden between the Devils and Rangers, the number one question is still, why did Devils coach John MacLean bench his $100 million dollar man Ilya Kovalchuk against Buffalo yesterday? We will never get an answer to that question, but the feeling is that it was a team decision whereby MacLean tried to send a message to his players by trying to bring them together, which he failed miserably against Buffalo last night. Another reason could be Kovy's play as of late as he also has struggled, but this could be MacLean's make or break point in his young coaching career. MacLean probably had a feeling the Devils could have a meltdown of sorts like last night and that the team could not sustain the same effort they had in Montreal for consecutive games, so he definitely was trying to send some sort of message. Maybe he was trying to look ahead to tonight and probably wanted him to be mentally sharp to face his nemesis in Sean Avery, who knows. So, tonight's game will definitely tell a lot about the Devils with or without Ilya Kovalchuk.

Martin Brodeur will return to the Devils goal tonight after making a relief appearance last night against the Sabres. It will likely be another Brodeur vs Lundqvist showdown, which for now Lundqvist owns Marty. My feeling is that Kovalchuk for now is likely to be scratched again just due to the fact that the Devils have two days off before playing in San Jose out west this Wednesday. Tonight's game could hinge on whether MacLean keeps his job as Devils coach, which many believe is in jeopardy.

Pelley the lone positive for Devils tonight!!! (Prudential Center looking like a Funeral Home for the Devils?)

There is nothing exciting about the Devils 6-1 loss to the Sabres tonight. However, winger Rod Pelley had an adventure. He took a shot to the nose from his teammate Jason Arnott which deflected of a Sabres defenseman, got up on his own skated to the medical trainer, and went into the locker room. Then, he was taken to hospital for X-Rays, which came back negative on his orbital bone, but revealed a broken nose. He then returned to the arena just in time for period three. Pelley did not know what the score was, but he just wanted to get back on the ice and finish the game.

That just shows you guts and determination. For a player that is not know for his offensive skills, but rather an edgy game style, he has the courage to come back to a game with a broken nose after even making a trip to the hospital. Devils fans should learn to love Rod Pelley and I think he will score timely goals for the team. For now, the Devils are trending backwards to the season, so they better go on a tear quickly and eventually start winning games in their building, which for now has been like a Funeral Home for the team.

Early season crisis brewing in Devils country?

Forget their salary cap problems, 2-5-1 overall record and 0-4-1 home record, the Devils are now officially in crisis mode with tonight's shocking scratching of star winger Ilya Kovalchuk. Coach John MacLean did nothing to clear the air on why he benched him other than to say that he was a healthy scratch and that it was to remain between himself and Ilya and not go public to the media. Kovalchuk was not available for comment after the game when the media requested to speak to him. This is not good news for both Ilya and the Devils especially in the early stages of his 15 year $100 million dollar contract.

Lou Lamoriello was also unavailable and provided all the info through a team spokesman. We do not know if John MacLean spoke to Lou about the decision to scratch him, but with the call up of Alexander Vasyunov, that seems to be an indication that both of them agreed upon the decision to bench Kovy. Last year coach Jacques Lemaire rested team captain Jamie Langenbrunner late in the season and it turned out to be somewhat of a distraction down the stretch. So, the question now is, whether MacLean's job is in jeopardy and what this means for Ilya Kovalchuk and the Devils going forward? There is no word whether he will play tomorrow, but expect a huge media circus on this issue. Another question could be, is this MacLean's rookie coach mistake? We do not know and probably will never know the reason much like Lemaire's and Langenbrunner's thing last season.

Another possible reason is that MacLean might want Kovalchuk to be mentally prepared to take on Sean Avery at MSG tomorrow, and that giving him tonight off was probably to clear his mind a little bit. If MacLean does get fired, tonight's decision will be proven costly unless the Devils turn things around quickly. Tomorrow will be an interesting day. The Devils do not play a home game until November 5th against the Rangers.

Devils home struggles continue, now 0-5 at "The Rock." Hedberg Pulled, Kovalchuk a Healthy Scratch

After a jubilant win on Thursday night against Montreal, things could not have started any worse for the Devils tonight. It all began with a shocking announcement that their $100 million dollar man Ilya Kovalchuk was a healthy scratch. The game was far worse than the scratch as the Devils were a complete mess against Buffalo with a 6-1 loss. Thomas Vanek had two goals, Tyler Myers, Patrick Kaleta, Tyler Ennis and Drew Stafford had the Sabres goals and Zach Parise had the lone Devils goal.

It was a tough start for Johan Hedberg in his Devils debut as he allowed four goals, but it was not all his fault. The Devils came out flying the first 5 minutes, but fell flat ever since. Rod Pelley suffered a broken nose in the game, but cam back for period 3 and the injury came of his teammates Jason Arnott slapper which deflected of a Sabres defenseman and hit Pelley in the nose. Hedberg was pulled after the 4th goal and Brodeur gave up the other 2. It seemed that the second Buffalo goal was what did the Devils in tonight. They battled after the 1st Sabres goal, but really gave up after the 2nd.

-----

The Devils recalled Alexander Vasyunov to make his NHL debut to fill in for Kovalchuk. A team spokesman said that Kovalchuk was a healthy scratch, but no direct reasons were given. Lou Lamoriello was not available for comment, so we might not get an answer tonight and there was no word on his status for tomorrow's game against the Rangers at MSG. The Devils quest for their 1st home win of the year will have to wait until Friday November 5th against the Rangers. They embark on a 6 game road trip with 4 games in the Pacific timezone. The Devils could sure use the trip as a positive to bond as a team with their early season struggles. This road trip could be the antidote to their slump. We shall see what happens. I will pay close attention to get the answer to why Kovalchuk was scratched. If it has something to do with his poor play, I would understand. In 2003, the Devils healthy scratched Scott Gomez in a middle of a slump and he went on a late season tear as a result. So, maybe it was to send a message or maybe it was flu-like symptoms.

Hedberg to start for Devils at home against Sabres

Marty Brodeur's quest to win his first home game this season will have to wait until November 5th, when they return to face the Rangers. However, it will be up to Johan Hedberg to get the Devils to their first home win this season after a 3-0 win over the Canadiens last night in Montreal. Devils coach John MacLean announced today that Hedberg will make his Devils debut tomorrow night against Buffalo and he is excited for the opportunity. He actually has a good record against Buffalo, in 17 games he is 12-2-2 with a 2.60 Goals against average (GAA) and a .917 save percentage with 1 shutout.

Zach Parise and David Clarkson did not practice today as John MacLean gave them both the day off, but the rest of team with the exception of Anton Volchenkov (broken nose/stiff neck) were on the ice. The Devils will play Buffalo tomorrow night before a Sunday night game against the Rangers at Madison Square Garden. So, Marty Brodeur will start against the Rangers on Sunday night.

Devils continue dominance of Habs at Bell Centre with 3-0 shutout

It seems that every time the Devils need to break out of a slump, it needs to be done in a Marty Brodeur shutout fashion. The Devils continued their success at Montreal with a 3-0 win at Bell Centre. Their last loss at Montreal was a 3-0 blanking by current Habs goaltender Carey Price back in March 2008. But that was way back, tonight was Brodeur's night to silence his critics with a 29 save effort to blank the Habs 3-0. Zach Parise, Jason Arnott and Matt Taormina scored the Devils goals. There were many who had doubt in Marty before the game even saying, his game is starting to drop and slip, but he made some sliding saves tonight.

Tonight's win showed that three tough grueling days of practices paid off. Their power play definitely still needs some work and they do need to build some momentum after the win. Olivier Magnan-Grenier had a good NHL debut as he was involved in some key physical battles. He wore #29, which Alexander Urbom wore before being sent to Albany. Matt Taormina continued his impressive play after a somewhat sluggish start to the season. His puck handling ability is getting better, though he needs to get somewhat smarter in his decisions. But, he definitely is taking small steps forward towards becoming an every day NHLer.

-----

Notes: Tonight's game also featured new Devils pregame host Christine Simpson, who will occasionally fill in for Steve Cangialosi, whenever he gets called to do play by play. She conducted intermission and post game interviews. Ilya Kovalchuk had some chances, but the Devils found some secondary chances production. There was no word on who will start in net on Saturday night at home against Buffalo or whether Anton Volchenkov will practice or skate tomorrow. It seems unlike Anton would play this weekend due to limited practice time. With 3 games in 4 nights, it seems tomorrow's practice will be a short one or even an optional. It would not surprise me if Marty starts both games this weekend, but it would be better if they gave him the night off before a huge Sunday night game at MSG vs Rangers. My odds are on Johan Hedberg to make his season debut on Saturday night at Prudential Center against Buffalo. The Devils will seek their first home win of the year this Saturday before embarking on a 6 game road trip with 5 of them against Western Conference teams.

-----

Here is their road trip schedule (all times Eastern):

Sunday October 24th at NY Rangers 7 PM (MSG+ HD)
Wednesday October 27th at San Jose Sharks 10:30 PM (MSG+ HD)
Friday October 29th at Anaheim Ducks 10 PM (MSG+ HD)
Saturday October 30th at Los Angeles Kings 10:30 PM (MSG+ HD)
Monday November 1st at Vancouver Canucks 10 PM (MSG+ HD)
*Wednesday November 3rd at Chicago Blackhawks 8:30 PM (MSG HD)

* = Blackhawks are Defending Stanley Cup Champions.

Discipline an issue early on in the season

The NHL season is almost two weeks old and we already had numerous suspensions and controversial hits and gestures. The first was Michael Cammalleri swiping his stick at Nino Niederreiter of the Islanders during the preseason injuring his ankle. It was minor injury, but still it cost him one game. It followed by Nicklas Hjalmarsson's hit on Jason Pominville, which cost him two games and Coyotes Shane Doan on Dan Sexton of Anaheim, who also got two games. Pierre-Luc Letourneau-LeBlond of the Devils was suspended one game for an instigating penalty against Washington taking a run at Marcus Johansson. That led to a demotion to the minors. Yesterday, Rick Rypien of Vancouver confronted a referee and a fan and was suspended indefinitely today pending a hearing.

Last but not least, we all know the infamous sex gesture James Wisniewski of the Islanders waived at Rangers and NHL super pest Sean Avery. That cost Wisniewski a whopping 2 games. So, there you go discipline will have to be controlled in the young 2010-2011 season. Let's keep the game safe as possible.

Brodeur unhappy with his play, Devils have to capitalize on chances and Power Play has to produce

Martin Brodeur admitted today that he is unhappy with his performance through six games. It is obvious considering the game on Friday night against Colorado where he gave up a soft goal. He does have one shutout, which is the Devils lone victory of the season, but other than that he has not been happy with a 1-4-1 record and mid 800 save percentage. This is not typical Marty fashion, but he knows he has to improve and be more aggressive and have better reflexes.

The Fact that the Devils are struggling to score goals could also be an indication that they are relying on him way too much this early in the season. While there has been a sense to start Johan Hedberg, Marty is not using the consecutive starts as an excuse. Many goaltenders have played well on consecutive starts and Brodeur knows he has to play better. On the other hand, the Devils have to capitalize on their scoring chances something they had plenty of in games against Colorado and Boston this past weekend. Craig Anderson and Tim Thomas stole both Prudential Center shows this past weekend for Colorado and Boston Respectively.

-----

The Power Play also has to start producing. The Devils had 7 minutes of Power Play time on Friday night against Colorado in the first period, one regular two minute PP and one five minute power play. They failed to convert on both, but had numerous chances. They managed to get one power play goal on a point shot by Matt Taormina. The Devils had a 5 on 3 power play on Saturday night against Boston, but were hesitant to shoot forcing the fans to boo the team as it entered the locker room. One thing is for certain, the Devils have to come together as a team and start producing offensively.

Devils hope to get season back on track in Montreal Thursday night, Volchenkov starts off ice workouts

After 5 days off, the Devils are anxious to get back in the win column and start some sort of winning streak. They went through three grueling practices including a rough one on Monday when coach John MacLean used every profane word you can think of. MacLean also switched the lines up to get some sort of spark by putting Zubrus with Parise and Zajac and Elias with Josefson and Kovalchuk. He also put Pelley with Arnott and Langenbrunner. The fourth line will consist of Adam Mair, Tim Sestito and David Clarkson.

The Defense will also look different with no Alexander Urbom, but it will include Olivier Magnan-Grenier. He was recalled from Albany on Monday and will play with Andy Greene while White will continue to play with Taormina and Tallinder with Corrente. Not surprisingly, Brodeur will start in his hometown of Montreal. Its very likely that Hedberg will make his Devils debut on Saturday night at home against Buffalo with Marty starting against the Rangers at Madison Square Garden on Sunday night. After Saturday's home game, the Devils will visit the Rangers, Sharks, Ducks, Kings, Canucks and defending champion Blackhawks. Hopefully, the Devils can get their first home win on Saturday or else they will have to wait until they return on Friday November 5th against the Rangers to try again. A west coast trip could be a good bonding experience for the team.

-----

Defenseman Anton Volchenkov has started off ice workouts, so he will miss Thursday nights game in Montreal. Lou Lamoriello said his condition was "Status Quo." He has really been using that phrase a lot over the past few months, very typical of his relationship with media. It seems that Volchenkov will likely miss this weekends games as well against Buffalo and NY Rangers. The Devils usually prefer a player coming back from injury whether long or short term go through two complete full contact practices, so his status for any games out west is unknown though the fact that he started off ice workout might likely mean that a return could happen sometime next weekend against either Anaheim or LA Kings. So, we shall see.

-----

Its safe to say, the Devils are struggling to come together as a team early on this season. Marty is struggling to make the big saves and they are not showing signs of putting together a 60 minute effort, but they are continuing to work on it. The Devils have played well in Montreal in recent years, but the Canadiens or Habs have a lot of fire power and explosiveness that they portrayed during their playoff run last year. It will be a difficult atmosphere for the Devils, so hopefully they can feed of their success in Montreal and get a victory.

Devils Notes/NHL tidbits

-There is no word on Anton Volchenkov from his visit to the doctor. His appointment was later in the afternoon, so Lou Lamoriello is unlikely to provide any info until tomorrow.

-Christine Simpson is joining the MSG Plus Devils telecast team and she will host pregame shows and other things when Steve Cangialosi steps in for Doc Emrick to do play by play. She will reportedly make an appearance on Thursday night in Montreal, but will host her first Devils telecast November 24th against Calgary when Cangialosi does Play by Play.

-The Detroit Red Wings were also hit with cap problems and were forced to dress 17 skaters yesterday, so the Devils are not alone in the area.

-Jason Arnott believes the Devils are close to breaking out of their slump and Marty believes players have to be more vocal with each other and provide certain leadership qualities.

Volchenkov close to returning, but will likely miss Thursday's game in Montreal

Anton Volchenkov has missed four games thus far this season with a broken nose and a stiff neck. He was all but ready to play last Monday against Pittsburgh, but was unable to due to a stiff neck which started to bother him. Right now it is only a stiff neck that is preventing him from practicing and playing, not the nose.

He will visit another doctor tomorrow to get a clear understanding when he will be able to return, but he is not expected to practice due to the visit. The Devils usually do not like players returning from injury to play a game unless they have at least two full practice sessions with contacts. Its possible Volchenkov may skate on his own, unless he is cleared by doctors for light or full contact practice. So, based on this information it is likely he will return Saturday night against Buffalo or Sunday at the Rangers. But, the likelihood is that he will come back next Wednesday at San Jose when the Devils go on their 6 game Western Conference road trip, which might be a good team bonding experience.

Devils have tough, rigorous practice

John MacLean's message was loud and clear today with him use of profanity pretty much after every bad and dumb pass a Devil make today. The players ran out of breathe today and no one was hit hard by today's events more than David Clarkson, who feels he's been playing well, but was demoted to the fourth line. As usual we can only hope the message translates onto the ice Thursday night in Montreal. Nobody should be more motivated than Marty Brodeur, who usually plays very well in his hometown. It seems that unless Anton Volchenkov's status changes that Olivier Magnan-Grenier will make his NHL debut that night. He is from nearby Sherbrooke, Quebec, so its going to make his debut in Montreal.

Here were the lines today in practice:

Zach Parise-Travis Zajac-Dainius Zubrus
Rod Pelley-Jason Arnott-Jamie Langenbrunner
Patrik Elias-Jacob Josefson-Ilya Kovalchuk
Adam Mair-Tim Sestito-David Clarkson

Colin White-Matt Taormina
Olivier Magnan-Grenier--Andy Greene
Henrik Tallinder-Matt Corrente

Cablevision, Fox still far apart on resolution

As most of you noticed this past weekend that News Corp has pulled the Fox signal from Cablevision customer. The sides are currently trying to negotiate a fair pact, but News Corp, the company that owns Fox is not budging by a single cent. The feud already cost Cablevision's 3 million cutomers Games 1 & 2 of the NLCS between the Giants and Phillies and the NFL's Giants-Lions and Cowboys-Vikings game. News Corp is demanding about $170 Million from Cablevision, more than double than what Cablevision is asking.

Fox will broadcast the World Series and Super Bowl this year and unless a resolution is not reached by October 27th, the first game of the World Series, Cablevision customers will be left in the dark. Even though News Corp rejected Cablevision's offer to go to binding arbitration, it seems very unlikely that the feud will drag on for much longer no matter how far apart they are. So, its likely that News Corp will restore Fox sometime this week or maybe even tonight just in time for a new episode of House and Lie To Me.

Devils change lines up, send Urbom to Albany and recall Olivier Magnan-Grenier

The Parise, Zajac Kovalchuk line is no more at least for now. After six straight games with little to no offense, coach John MacLean switched up the lines and put Zubrus at Right Wing with Parise and Zajac, Elias is now with Josefson and Kovalchuk and Rod Pelley is now with Arnott and Langenbrunner Adam Mair is with Tim Sestito and David Clarkson.

The team also assigned defenseman Alexander Urbom to Albany of the AHL and recalled defenseman Olivier Magnan-Grenier. Urbom has not played well the past two games and was on the ice for 2 of the 4 Bruins goals. He was benched in the 3rd period. Magnan is a plus 2 in Albany so far with no goals. Urbom will likely be back later this year, but it seems he has a lot more to learn.

Anton Volchenkov remains out with a broken nose and stiff neck, so his status for Thursday is unknown. The fact that he is still not practicing seems to be an indication that the Devils do not want to rush him back from injury. But, since its Monday and with the huge gap between Thursday's game, the Devils might have just given him a day off today. He might be getting evaluated by team doctors today maybe just to get medical clearance. We shall see Thursday.

Devils offensive woes continue in 4-1 loss to Bruins at home

The Devils have to remember that they are a good team, but that is why other teams have played their best hockey against them. Think about it, when they did not have Kovalchuk last year, teams took the Devils lightly and thus that is why they had their share of success. Tonight was a prime example of why the Devils are probably going to continue to struggle unless everyone brings their "A" Game. They failed to score on a 5 on 3, which are usually huge turning points in games of this meaning. Though, Dainius Zubrus struck first, his one goal was not enough to hold of the Bruins as the Devils fell 4-1. Tim Thomas was stellar and Marty Brodeur continued to allow iffy goals, but part can attribute to a weak defensive corp. Jordan Caron, Shawn Thornton, Michael Ryder and Milan Lucic had the Bruins goals.

----

Thursday in Montreal might be a good place to start to build confidence, but is it a game or two late. The 1-4-1 start is their worst in over two decades, so something has to change. They did juggle some lines today by Having Kovalchuk play with Clarkson and Josefson and put Zubrus with Zajac and Parise, but that failed. Sure, holding a closed door meeting can get some players attention, but most of the time they are ineffective. One things is certain, Devils fans and players have to stay calm and patient in the most tough circumstances of this caliber. I still think the Devils will get a streak going and I hope unlike last year that a trip out west could bring them closer together. Something of that nature could be an antidote for the team. But John MacLean's name is definitely on the coaching hot seat, but I am not Lou, who might still have a lot of faith in him to turn things around.

Brodeur to start again tonight against Bruins, Thomas to start for Boston. Should Langenbrunner be stripped of "C?"

It will be a pair of number 30s battling each other in goal as well as two former Vezina winners. Martin Brodeur will make his 6th straight start in goal this year while Tim Thomas will go for Boston. It is not shocking that Marty is starting as he probably would want to rebound from a tough outing last night against Colorado. Coach John MacLean feels Hedberg needs more practice time with the team, so it is a good bet he will make his first start next Saturday at home against Buffalo, though it is not a sure thing. It seems the talk in the locker room has been much about secondary scoring and pushing each other more and more, but let's hope that translates onto the ice. It will be same line-up again tonight as Anton Volchenkov will still sit out and likely will return Thursday night in Montreal. You know Marty is going to start in Montreal, so the Moose will likely wait til next Saturday night. After next Saturday the Devils will have 6 straight road games against the Rangers, Sharks, Ducks, Kings, Canucks and Defending Stanley Cup Champion Blackhawks. You almost know that the Devils will want to win that game since. Scott Stevens always wanted to beat the Defending Champs.

---

Should Langenbrunner be stripped of captaincy or be Salary Cap Cut? Well Jamie has been invisible this year for the Devils, but for now he is the captain, but it would not surprise me if it eventually happens. He has struggled so far, but I will say this, he was relatively effective against Colorado last night. Right now the mission is to score a goal and score early and often and not get too overconfident. My belief is that overconfidence is contributing to the Devils early season struggles. So, for now Langenbrunner is the Captain and unless his leadership skills fall, he will remain with the "C."

Devils have to find secondary scoring in order to get on a roll

Ever since last years trade for Ilya Kovalchuk, it seems that the Devils relied way too much on him to score goals. And for the early part of this season, 5 games in, the team is still looking like its relying on him and Zach Parise, who only has one goal so far to light the lamp. Even though Jason Arnott has two goals, its not enough for them to win. Tonight would be a good night for some players to step up their game and get the puck into the net. Zach Parise for one has to go on a tear, he also got off to a slow start last season before finding his groove in late October, early November. Now its time for Patrik Elias, Dainius Zubrus, David Clarkson and Travis Zajac to rack up points along with role players such as Rod Pelley, Adam Mair and rookie Jacob Josefson.

They cannot achieve success with just Kovalchuk and Parise scoring goals, it has to be other guys putting the puck in the net. If Kovalchuk and Parise are covered, its perfect opportunity for other players to find the space needed. Also, it would be a good ideal to move Kovalchuk back to Left Wing, his natural position, he is not great on the Right Wing, Zach or Patrik can play nicely their, but Ilya is a LW. We will see what happens against Boston tonight. Its unclear whether Brodeur or Hedberg will start tonight.

Devils rally to get first home win falls short in 3-2 setback against Avalanche

The Devils had every opportunity to win the game in the first period against Colorado, but failed because of one guy, "Craig Anderson." Anderson was the star of the game and probably a one man show for the most part with 41 saves. What made the loss worse was the fact that the Devils had a 5 minute power play in the first period and failed to score on it after very good cycle passes, but Anderson just had a good feeling about the puck. The Devils had 7 minutes of Power Play time in the first and had it not been for a Scott Hannan swipe at the puck at the goal line after Dainius Zubrus had Anderson beat. Marty Brodeur continued his early season struggles after allowing a stoppable shot to Cody McLeod to squeak by him with 4 seconds to go on a 4 minute Colorado Power Play. Minutes later, McLeod was ejected from the game for a boarding penalty, but the Devils failed to capitalize.

T.J. Galiardi and Chris Stewart scored the other Avalanche goals. Galiardi is quietly becoming a hit in Colorado behind Matt Duchene and Ryan O'Reilly. Anderson played like a Vezina trophy winner today. If the Devils can manufacture a 60 minute effort and put the puck in the net early and often, they can go on a tear, but they are getting close to breaking out of their funk. Matt Taormina scored his first NHL goal today and Ilya Kovalchuk cut the deficit to 3-2 midway in the 3rd, but again Anderson stood tall. The Devils had a partially open net with like 10 seconds left, but Jamie Langenbrunner delayed his shot a bit which let Anderson get back into slight position. So, for now the Devils are an early season disappointment with their roster but they have to start their winning ways very soon or else it can turn out to be a long season.

Notes: Johan Hedberg is likely to get his first Devils start tomorrow against Boston, so the team will look to him to get their season rolling. With 5 games in, their really is no time to panic for the Devils fans, but a loss tomorrow would be painful. They really gave a great effort tonight, and tomorrow will not get any easier with Tuukka Rask coming into town. The Devils have to get Zach Parise going and especially Clarkson, Langenbrunner and Elias in the goal column. If those guys do not produce, it will be a long season for them and Devils fans.

10 Non Devils related notes through Week 1 of NHL Season

Now that the NHL Season is officially a week old, here are some things I have officially noticed:

-Jordan Eberle will be a potential Calder Trophy nominee and it will be a very tight race this season between him, P.K. Subban, Taylor Hall, Tyler Seguin and Magnus Pajarvii.
-The Leafs at the moment could be showing overconfidence, but I think they will battle for the 8th playoff seed.
-The Penguins will eventually get used to their new arena Consol Energy Center and win games there, but I think they are still Igloo Sick.
-The Blackhawks definitely have a cup hangover much like Pittsburgh did last season.
-The Red Wings will be a contender this season as they usually are.
-Steven Stamkos will is on pace to be a Hart Trophy nominee, but let's not get too overconfident there.
-Lightning have picked the right coach in Guy Boucher and he will be a Jack Adams Candidate for coach of the year. They will make the playoffs.
-Dallas is off to hot start.
-Carolina will also battle for the 8th playoff spot this year.
-Finally, St. Louis will also battle for a playoff spot.

Notes: This is only week one, so like I mentioned above, let's not get too overconfident.

Devils finally at 22 player roster, call up Josefson, Corrente and Sestito

It looks like the Devils will ice a full 12 forward line-up tomorrow and roll four lines against Colorado. The team today recalled forwards Tim Sestito and Jacob Josefson and defenseman Matt Corrente. Sestito and Josefson were given 14 and 16 respectively and Corrente number 22. Corrente was 32 last season, but was given 22 in place of demoted LeBlond. Anton Volchenkov is likely to miss this weekends games, but is expected back next Thursday in Montreal. But, all aside Josefson could be a main stay from this point on, because at some point when Rolston and Salvador are ready to come of LTIR, someone will have to be traded.

Now the Devils have 22 roster players and will go with 18 skaters tomorrow against Colorado after a week of turmoil with their lineup.

Devils finally in the win column with 1-0 triumph in overtime in Buffalo

For now the Devils and their fans can breathe a sigh of relief as Ilya Kovalchuk scored early in overtime to give the Devils a 1-0 win against the Buffalo Sabres at HSBC Arena in Buffalo. The victory was the 111th career shutout for Marty Brodeur who bested his friend but sometimes nemesis Ryan Miller.

It was a complete effort today by the Devils out-shooting the Sabres 15-1 in the first period. But, the game felt like a goaltending duel much like a pitchers dual in Baseball between two very good aces. The Devils and Sabres have a lot of goaltending duals between Miller and Brodeur as both bring out the best in each other. Miller bested Brodeur in the Olympics last year leaving Roberto Luongo to win the gold against him.

Notes: Brian Rolston will be place on LTIR with a sports hernia and will miss 4-6 weeks, so tough going for him. The Devils are expected to reach out to Albany and recall a player or two to fill out their roster and it will likely be Mattias Tedenby, Jacob Josefson or Adam Henrique. LeBlond is a possibility, but he will have to clear re-entry waiver first.

Coach John MacLean rips Devils at morning skate, ends skate early

John MacLean finally showed up as a Head Coach int he league by sending his team off early in the morning skate at HSBC Arena in Buffalo where the Devils will face the Sabre tonight with 16 skaters. A bad pass by star winger Zach Parise triggered the anger and MacLean used profane language on the team and send a message which hopefully will translate in the game tonight. He called his team casual and other terms I cannot describe.

Notes: The Devils will have Adam Mair in line-up tonight and will dress 16 skaters. Volchenkov is still day-to-day and is unlikely to return to line-up until next Thursday at Montreal. They have not received any updates on Brian Rolston's groin exam, but it seems that he has a sports hernia and will need surgery which will sideline him 4-6 weeks and eligible for LTIR, and that could open the door for Devils to possibly call up Mattias Tedenby, Jacob Josefson, or Adam Henrique to have the full four lines. SO we shall see, but it looks like the Devils are slowly on their way to fixing their cap issues.

Tuesday, October 12, 2010

Devils finally sign Adam Mair, to have 16 skaters on Wednesday

Things are slowly starting to come around for Devils and their salary cap issues. Today, they signed forward Adam Mair to a one-year-contract and he will play Wednesday night against his former Sabres team. Brian Rolston and Anton Volchenkov will remain out with a groin injury and broken nose respectively. Rolston will likely miss a week or two, while Volchenkov remains day-to-day with a broken nose and stiff neck. He is likely to return next week at Montreal, while Rolston sometime after that assuming Lou does not trade him or anyone else. A trade in the next few weeks is inevitable for the Devils, because they simply cannot afford to play with the current roster.

Devils lose to Penguins 3-1 at Prudential Center with only 15 skaters, Martin scores Empty Netter

Despite losing today and remaining winless for the season, the Devils probably played their best game today this season. Martin Brodeur played very well in the losing effort after two very tough games over the weekend. Now, the Devils must find some consistency and try to get their 1st win at Buffalo on Wednesday, which will not be easy.

The Devils lost 3-1 today to the Pittsburgh Penguins, a team they beat all six meetings last season. Pittsburgh struck first late in the first period on an Alex Goligoski goal and Mark Letestu struck early in the 2nd to give the Pens a comfortable 2-0 lead. Patrik Elias cut the deficit to 2-1 late in the 3rd, but former Devil Paul Martin sealed the deal with an empty netter.

It seemed like the Devils are almost where they need to be. They just have to establish some sort of confidence to get something going. I do not expect them to play well in October and parts of November, but I still think they will be a playoff team. There is no cause for concern with this Devils team, because where has a good regular season gotten the Devils the past three years? Out of the playoffs in the first round, so maybe this rough start is a good bonding mechanism for the Devils. It looks like they will finally sign Adam Mair tomorrow as they placed Pierre-Luc Letourneau-LeBlond on waivers and intend to send him to Albany. I think either Volchenkov or Rolston, maybe both will play on Wednesday, so hopefully they can get some sort of roster stability.

But for now Devils fans have to remain patient in the most impatient of times for the Devils.

Notes: The Devils only had 9 forwards and 6 defensemen today due to salary cap issues and injuries. That makes only 15 skaters. We should know more tomorrow about what the roster will look like for Wednesday, but its up to Lou.

Sunday, October 10, 2010

Paul Martin ready to face former team

Former Devils defenseman Paul Martin is set to make his return tomorrow against the Devils in Prudential Center fir the first time since he signed there on July 1st. In fact Martin admitted that the Devils focus on trying to resign Ilya Kovalchuk was part of his reasoning to leave New Jersey, but also wanted to return. His home states Wild also made an offer, but it was not as good as the Penguins.

Martin said, he expects to get booed in Prudential Center, but it might not be healthy for Devils fans to do so since a lot of returnees and their teams have fared well in their return to face the Devils. Scott Niedermayer, Scott Gomez, and Brian Gionta to name a few. Niedermayer's Ducks defeated the Devils in February 2008 when he returned to face them. Gomez's Rangers dominated the Devils for the most part since he left New Jersey and Brian Gionta's Habs beat the Devils in January 2010 along with Scott Gomez, who is now on the Canadiens.

It will be a very crucial game for both teams who do not want to fall into an 0-3 hole especially for the Devils. We shall see tomorrow.

Should Devils fans be concerned about 0-2 start?

The Regular Season maybe 82 games long, but usually there are fans that give up on a team after game one. Relax Devils fans, there is no need for concern. I think the month of October will be tough for them, because all the salary cap issues are not sorted out. When Bryce Salvador is ready to return from his concussion, Lou will have to make moves and a trade is inevitable in the near future, but for now the Salvador concussion was a relief, but it definitely complicated things a bit. The Devils started out 0-2 last year and back in 2001-2002, I believe they were 0-3 or 0-4, so its not the end of the world.

Now, the focus should be solely on defense and goaltending, two areas that have struggled thus far for the Devils in first two games. Marty is playing terrible, but the team is not giving him enough offensive support. Brodeur will start against Pittsburgh and there is no indication when Hedberg will get the nod, but its likely to happen sometime this week.

So, there should be no concern, because as much as this is a no-excuse world, a new coach and new defense needs to adapt and create some sort of chemistry. So, I think things will be much more calm for the Devils once they get through this bumpy stretch, but the structure needs to improve. Tomorrow's game will be very huge for the Devils, because they certainly want to establish a winning feeling. Hopefully coach John MacLean had a team meeting today and explained to them that they needed a full 60 minute effort.

Capitals rout Devils 7-2, Volchenkov, Rolston hurt, LeBlond to be suspended

In a game that was to showcase 2 of the NHL's biggest Russian Stars ended up being an Alexander Ovechkin show. Ovechkin had 2 goals, one on a penalty shot to lead the Capitals to a blow out win against the Devils 7-2. Jason Arnott and Henrik Tallinder scored the Devils goals. The Devils led twice in the game before collapsing in the 2nd period. They had a very good 1st period as Tallinder's goal was a short-handed goal.

But the tide turned in the second as Ovechkin took over and bested Ilya Kovalchuk in the contest. Kovalchuk was non-existent in the game along with his line today. Anton Volchenkov broke his nose off a Nicklas Backstrom shot, but he will likely be a game time decision on Monday. Brian Rolston suffered a back injury and Pierre-Luc Letourneau-LeBlond got an instigator for fighting and will be suspended for one game. So as a result the Devils could face man power crisis and might play 18, goalies included on Monday against Pittsburgh. There was almost a brawl late int he 3rd period as Kovalchuk and Mike Green dropped the gloves along with Pelley and Hendricks and Clarkson as well as LeBlond went after John Carlson.

Overall, the Devils must find some structure and Marty Brodeur has to regain his confidence in the process or its going to be a long season for the Devils. If there was one positive the Devils could take away is that they had a strong 1st period and must duplicate that kind of effort for a full 60 minutes. Also, you have to credit them for the fights since you know they were not going to leave DC without some scrums. The Devils will face Pittsburgh on Monday at 4 PM in a battle of winless teams. So, the Devils must find ways to win and I still think they will get it going, but Lou Lamoriello must clear cap space now, because 20 guys is just to tough to win with.

Devils must regroup tomorrow night in Washington

It seems like every Devils season gets on track on the road, which is what happened last year when the Devils started out 9-0 on the road and only 1-3 at home. In fact every time the Devils travel to Washington, there is a lot of buzz about the match up primarily due to Alexander Ovechkin. The Devils had one of their best games of the year last season in Washington in a shootout win. It was their 5th game of the year and they trailed 2-0 before rallying back and tightening up defensively. It will be tough for them tomorrow night, but the Devils must find a way to win.

It looks like Martin Brodeur will start again as expected and probably will do so again on Monday against Pittsburgh at Prudential Center. Remember it is a 4 PM start due to Columbus Day, so some college students are screwed like me as there is class on the day. But getting back to Washington, both teams will need to regroup after poor starts. The Devils were lucky sort off to get out of the game with a point tonight, but they need to give a complete team effort and the other lines got to get it going other that the Kovalchuk unit. It looks like they might need another forward as the 11 forward, 7 defensemen did not work too well tonight. So, its possible someone will be called up or that Adam Mair will be signed, but the Devils need to trade someone in order to do so. Should be an interesting night in Washington tomorrow.

Devils Drop Opener to Stars 4-3 in overtime

The Devils fell to the Dallas Stars 4-3 in overtime tonight at Prudential Center. Travis Zajac, Zach Parise and Jason Arnott tallied in losing effort. It was a tough debut for Devils defenseman Matt Taormina and most of the Devils new look defense. Puck Management seemed to be the biggest issue for the Devils and passes were not crisp tonight. The turning point of the game seemed to be the Kovalchuk shot off the left post, which could have been a 3-0 Devils lead instead turned into a 2-1 lead as Dallas scored seconds later. If there was a positive, the ZIP line or the Parise, Zajac and Kovalchuk unit looked good. Alexander Urbom looked good and Volchenkov was descent. Brodeur did not have a good game if you ask me as some shots were stoppable, but he will start on Saturday night in Washington. Loui Eriksson scored the winner for Dallas in overtime on a 2 on 1 rush with Tallinder the only defenseman back.

Tough Penguins debut for former Devil Paul Martin

Paul Martin was definitely a huge loss to the Devils defensive corps even though they were able to pick up Henrik Tallinder and Anton Volchenkov in Free Agency. What made it a bigger loss was the fact that he chose to sign with arch division rival Pittsburgh Penguins following the footsteps of former Devil Mike Rupp, who went to the Pens last off-season. Martin is not the only high profile Devil to sign with division rivals. Bobby Holik, Scott Gomez, and Bruce Drive all went to the Rangers across the Hudson for more money.

But tonight, the Flyers spoiled Paul Martin's Penguins debut and their unveiling of their new arena, Consol Energy Center. Paul Martin coughed up the puck to Flyers forward Claude Giroux, which lead to Giroux's shorthanded goal. It was a tough loss for the Penguins in general as Sidney Crosby was kept off the score sheet. I will say the new building looks incredible as it brings a terrific fan atmosphere closer to the action. The Pens will definitely do some nice things in this building. The Devils also lost their first ever game at the Prudential Center in Newark.

Devils excited and anxious to get season started

With a little over 24 hours to go before dropping the puck on a new NHL Season, the Devils say they are very excited and anxious to get going on a new year campaign. Its been a tough and bumpy ride the past three years for the Devils after failing to advance out of the first round of the playoffs in each of those seasons, however thus year the team is much more optimistic. The Devils have not advanced past Round 2 since winning the cup in 2003, so there is definitely a huge burden on their shoulder this year to construct a long playoff run.

John MacLean said he will be nervous and excited for his coaching debut in the NHL, though he did coach the Devils as a fill-in for two games in December 2005 due to Head Coach Larry Robinson's throat infection. Now, Larry Robinson will serve as the assistant to John MacLean this season. This is probably the most excited the Devils fans have been due to the busy off-season for the Devils which included re-signing Ilya Kovalchuk and signing defensemen Henrik Tallinder and Anton Volchenkov along with backup goaltender Johan Hedberg. A lot of the season will depend on how much games will Martin Brodeur play as he has played at least 75 games in two of the past three years. Brodeur missed four months in the 2008-2009 season with a torn biceps tendon, but cam back in time for the playoffs and played well despite being knocked out of the first round in dramatic fashion which included one of the worst playoff game 7 collapses in NHL history. John MacLean was the assistant on the bench with coach Brent Sutter at the time.

So, for now the Devils know they will need to get off to a good start and finish strong down the stretch and remain very upbeat especially in times of adversity. They also have to get the fatigue factor out of the way, because simply put everyone goes through it, but you cannot use it as an excuse. The Devils looked very fatigued down the stretch last year and tired and it showed in the series against the Flyers in Round 1. This season will definitely tell a lot about the Devils as they are in a two year window to win the cup.

Devils finalize roster before 3 PM deadline, send Taormina to Albany and call up Center Adam Henrique

The Devils are going with 20 forwards for now, but that could change before Friday. 20 is league required minimum for number of roster players. As expected, they place Salvador and Salmela on LTIR. So, Bryce Salvador will be out until early November. However, they will end up going with 12 forwards, not 11 as they sent defenseman Matt Taormina to Albany of the AHL and called up prospect Adam Henrique, who is also very highly regarded among the organization. So for now the temporary roster for Friday is:

Zach Parise, Travis Zajac, Ilya Kovalchuk
Patrik Elias, Jason Arnott, Jamie Langenbrunner
Brian Rolston, Dainius Zubrus, David Clarkson
Pierre-Luc Letourneau-LeBlond, Adam Henrique, Rod Pelley

Henrik Tallinder, Andy Greene
Alexander Urbom, Anton Volchenkov
Colin White, Mark Fraser

Martin Brodeur
Johan Hedberg

Notes: Adam Mair will continue to skate with the team and it is possible more moves will be made by Friday as its not certain whether Henrique will play against Dallas. Mair could very well sign by then as well, but a trade could be necessary. The Salvador injury buys the Devils some time to permanently get under the cap when Bryce gets healthy. Josefson and Tedenby could also be called up by Friday, so it will be very puzzling trying to figure out the Devils opening night roster.

Devils wating for league approval on roster

From now on it appears as if the Devils will er on the side of caution and announce moves after the league approves them to avoid all the mess that happened as a result of the Ilya Kovalchuk contract rejection. The Devils have submitted a roster to the league, presumably the 20 man roster and placed defensemen Bryce Salvador and Anssi Salmela on LTIR. Now they will wait for their approval before announcing the moves, which should not take very long. So, expect an announcement very soon. It appears they will go with 11 forwards, 7 defensemen and the 2 goaltenders on Friday.

Adam Mair likely to continue to skate with Devils without contract

Forward Adam Mair, who is in camp on a tryout for the Devils is still not under contract. The Devils have to be under the league's $59.4 Million dollar salary cap by 3 PM Easter Time today have decided to likely ride 20 players on their roster. This in part due to Bryce Salvador's concussion injury which will keep him out indefinitely. Once Salvador is cleared to return, the Devils will then likely have to make a trade or two to create room for Salvador and possibly Adam Mair along with prospects Jacob Josefson and Mattias Tedenby. Still you never know what Lou Lamoriello might do today as he still might make a trade or two and sign Mair, so unless the Devils decide to release him from his tryout due to salary cap issues and not sign him, the Devils will ride 11 forwards, 7 defensemen and 2 goaltenders. Mair could also decide not to skate with team and seek employment elsewhere. But, for now Mair will only continue to practice based on the current language from Devils training camp. Here is the Devils projected roster for Friday night:

Zach Parise, Travis Zajac, Ilya Kovalchuk
Patrik Elias, Jason Arnott, Jamie Langenbrunner
Brian Rolston Dainius Zubrus David Clarkson
Pierre-Luc Letourneau-LeBlond, Rod Pelley

Andy Greene, Henrik Tallinder
Colin White, Matt Taormina
Alexander Urbom, Anton Volchenkov
Mark Fraser

Martin Brodeur
Johan Hedberg

Injured Reserve: Bryce Salvador, Anssi Salmela
Unsigned: Adam Mair
Possible Call-Ups: Jacob Josefson, Mattias Tedenby, Matt Corrente

Devils Salary Cap Scenerios

Here are ways the Devils can get under the cap and where Adam Mair fits into the equation.

-They can place Bryce Salvador and Anssi Salmela on Long Term Injury Reserve (LTIR) and start the year with the league required minimum of 20 players on the roster. It will be 11 forwards and 7 defensemen plus the two goaltenders. That would get the Devils approximately $90,000 under the cap. Adam Mair is still unsigned. This would be a short term solution however as Salvador is not expected to miss significant amount of time, but it would give the Devils flexibility they need. However, they would need to make a move, likely a trade before activating Salvador of the LTIR.

-They sign Adam Mair and make a trade or demote a player under the age of 35 to get under the cap to the minors. Colin White or Dainius Zubrus would be good candidates.

-They can just make some trades and sign Mair and bring up highly touted prospects Mattias Tedenby and Jacob Josefson from Albany of AHL.

Notes: Defensemen Matt Taormina and Alexander Urbom have been told by Lou Lamoriello they will be sticking around for now. Urbom switched his number from 34 to 29, which belonged to Salmela. Salmela likely will be out until January or February. Taormina went from 39 to 20, Jay Pandolfo's old number. Taormina will likely head back to the minors once Salvador returns assuming Bryce is not traded. If Salvador is on LTIR, he cannot be traded without his consent. Like I mentioned yesterday Josefson and Tedenby or maybe one of them could be brought back up for Friday's opener from Albany. Judging by where things stand right now, it seems likely the Devils will go down to the wire finalizing their roster plans, so look for something to happen tomorrow.

Tedenby, Josefson, McKenna, Corrente assigned to Albany of AHL

It looks like for now top Devils prospects Jacob Josefson and Mattias Tedenby will start the year in the minors in Albany rather than the big club as the team is in the process of making its final cuts. The roster is now down to 23 players with the exception of Bryce Salvador (LTIR, concussion) and Anssi Salmela (Torn ACL, meniscus). Matt Corrente was also sent to the minors meaning Matt Taormina and Alexander Urbom have made the team for now.

GM Lou Lamoriello left open the possibility that some of the players sent down today could be brought up by Friday's opener. He is still in the process of clearing cap space, which he must do by Wednesday at 3 PM, so this could be one of the reasons these cuts took place. So, Devils fans like me who will be in attendance on Friday could still see Josefson and Tedenby, though they will likely be back and forth between NJ and Albany for the start of the season as the AHL experience will be beneficial to them. Mike McKenna will stay in Albany likely as the starting goaltender, but will be the #1 choice to be brought back up if Hedberg gets hurt.

Notes: Defenseman Rob Davison was placed on waivers today, so if he clears by noon tomorrow, he will head to Albany. All is quiet on the getting under the cap front, but Lou is clearly working on some things.

Devils patiently awaiting salary cap cuts

With the preseason now over, Devils GM Lou Lamoriello now has until 3 PM Wednesday Eastern Time to get the team under the $59.4 million dollar salary cap. This will not be easy as he has to decide which players to ship out. Bruce Salvador's injury and placement on LTIR will not be enough, so he will have to trade or send one more player to the minors, but its very likely a trade will better. So, from now on til Wednesday, the Devils players must practice and patiently await the final cuts. It all seems certain that Josefson, Tedenby and Mair have made the team for now, and it is very likely that Mair will sign a contract once the cap space is cleared.

The Toronto Maple Leafs, Colorado Avalanche and Los Angeles Kings have been rumored as the likeliest trade partners with the Devils to help them get under the cap. Toronto has shown interest in Zubrus, Rolston, Langenbrunner or Clarkson. Colorado and Los Angeles like Langenbrunner or Zubrus. Zubrus will be the easiest figure to move, because his contract does not contain a no-trade clause. Rolston's $5.025 million dollar cap hit and no-trade clause will be difficult to move although he has been the number one target for Lou to try to move, so it will be very interesting. Colin White's $3 million dollar cap hit will also be hard, but his advantage of staying is that he is one of the only core defenseman remaining on the Devils, so Lou Lamoriello might be inclined to keep him.

Here is once again the list of possible players that might get traded and teams interested:

Brian Rolston (Tor, LA, Col, Min, Bos, NYI)
David Clarkson (Tor)
Patrik Elias (Tor, Col, LA, Dal)
Jamie Langenbrunner (LA, Dal, Col)
Dainius Zubrus (Tor, LA, Col, NYI)
Travis Zajac (CGY, Van, Edm)
Colin White (Tor, Mon, Ott)
Bryce Salvador, IR (Tor, Col, STL, Dal, LA, NYI)

Devils drop preseason finale 2-1 against Islanders, Parise line shines

The Devils failed to beat a split Islanders squad in their preseason finale at Nassau Colosseum in Long Island losing 2-1. The other half of the Islanders played in Quebec City against the Montreal Canadiens and lost 7-2. Josh Bailey and Blake Comeau scored for the Islanders and Zach Parise scored the lone goal for the Devils continuing to show the brilliance of their line. Ilya Kovalchuk had a penalty shot stopped by Rick DiPietro, so that was the difference in the game. It is funny having two players like Kovalchuk and DiPietro face each other, because both have 15 year contracts. DiPietro signed his contract in September 2006, so he has 11 years remaining.

Saturdays game was the last chance for coach John MacLean to assess his rookies and prospects. Its likely that one or two of them will be assigned to Albany depending on who the Devils trade as part of their salary cap cuts. My gut is that you will see Taormina start the year in the minors, but he has gotten better as the preseason rolled along. Tedenby and Josefson got more impressive and Urbom probably had a dissatisfying game tonight, but he will likely make the team. Adam Mair will have to wait til the salary cap cuts are made.

The Devils have until Wednesday October 6th at 3 PM ET to get under the salary cap, not midnight like I wrote in one of my previous posts, so the clock is ticking. Its very likely that Lou Lamoriello will try to get under the cap very quickly, so something should happen between tomorrow and Wednesday so the player getting dealt could get accustomed to new surroundings. So, right now it is a wait and see.

Salvador Injury, Possible Cap Cuts could open doors for Devils youth

Sorry I failed to mention this in the previous post, but with the salary cap cuts approaching, it will definitely give players like Alexander Urbom, Mattias Tedenby and Matt Taormina along with Jacob Josefson a chance to make the team and its very likely that all of them will make it. Matt Corrente feels he has played strong enough to remain with the big club. Adam Mair is probably well on his way to making it, but will have to wait for the Devils to make some moves before signing a contract. This is also due to the Bryce Salvador injury.

While there is no word on who might get dealt, the asking price is not going to be high and will likely be a prospect currently playing in Junior and a mid-round draft pick anywhere from rounds 2-5. Based on how things are going so far, the projected line-up could be something like this:

Parise Zajac Kovalchuk
Elias Arnott Langenbrunner
Rolston Josefson Tedenby
Pelley Mair Clarkson
Extras: LeBlond, Palmieri

Greene Volchenkov
Urbom Tallinder
White Corrente
Extras; Fraser, Taormina
(Salvador, IR), but likely will be traded once he returns.

Notes: Its seems very likely Zubrus will be dealt as a salary cap cut.

Devils defeat Islanders 4-3 in preseason action at "The Rock," Salvador out indefinitely with concussion

The Devils played arguably their best preseason game so far this year defeating the Islanders 4-3 at Prudential Center on Friday night. Jesse Joensuu gave the Islanders a 1-0 lead 1:38 into the game, but Jason Arnott tied it up at 5:05 of the first period. Zach Parise scored 14:14 into the first period to give the Devils a 2-1 lead at the end of one.

Brian Rolston's slapper on the Power Play 7:44 into the 2nd extended the Devils lead to 3-1 followed by Patrik Elias at 12:14 into the period made it 4-1. However, a pair of goals from Matt Moulson of the Islanders after that cut the deficit to 4-3. Travis Zajac had a strong game with 2 assists on goals by Parise and Rolston, Arnott had an assist on Elias's goal, and Urbom, Greene and Parise had an assist each. Parise feels his line needs to be better defensively after the game, so expect them to work on that before the opener next Friday night against Dallas.

The Devils will conclude the preseason tomorrow night against the same Islanders at Nassau Colosseum at 7 PM to finish off their back to back. Johan Hedberg will start and play the entire game with Mike McKenna as backup. Brodeur will rest tomorrow and not make the trip and Anton Volchenkov could see action after missing tonight's game with a sore foot for precautionary reasons.

Notes: Tests have revealed that Bryce Salvador has suffered a concussion after a hit from Flyers forward James vanRiemsdyk on Tuesday night and will be out indefinitely, so it is unlikely he will be available for next Friday's opener. The concussion however could also be stemmed from the fight against Rangers Kris Newbury on Saturday, which caused inner ear problems. There was no word from Devils management whether Salvador would be placed on Long Term Injured Reserve (LTIR), which could give Devils cap relief as they are in the process of trying to clear salary due to the Kovalchuk contract. Salvador's name has come up in trade rumors and with him possibly and most likely going on IR, he cannot be traded without his consent. His salary would still count against the cap, but the Devils could exceed the cap by his salary number. However, since the Devils roster is not finalized and even if he goes on IR, they will still be over the cap, so a trade of one player or two will likely be needed. The Devils have until Wednesday midnight to get under the cap to be or face the possibility of having to forfeit their opening game against Dallas or other heavy sanctions. The NHL season kicks off Thursday in Helsinki, Finland with the Minnesota Wild facing the Carolina Hurricanes as part of the annual NHL Premiere event.

Here is the NHL Premiere games for this season:

Thursday October 7 and Friday October 8:

Minnesota Wild vs Carolina Hurricanes (Helsinki, Finland)

Friday October 8 and Saturday October 9:

San Jose Sharks vs Columbus Blue Jackets (Stockholm, Sweden)

Saturday October 9 and Sunday October 10:

Boston Bruins vs Phoenix Coyotes (Prague, Czech Republic)
