There will be a night when the Devils offense does explode, but just not tonight. It was Canucks 3 and Devils 0, the Devils get shutout for the first time this year. The positive for the Devils tonight is that they worked hard, but not hard enough. Roberto Luongo made 30 saves and the Canucks got some lucky bounces and beat Marty Brodeur. It is Luongo's second shutout against Marty in the last three meetings. Back in December of 2007, the Devils were shutout 5-0 at then GM Place, now Rogers Arena. Last season Luongo defeated Brodeur at Prudential Center 5-2.
The question is when will the Devils offense show up? Answers will come on the ice and particularly during the power play, which is going to be very crucial to the Devils success this year. The Problem is that Kovalchuk is the only point shot on the power play with all the injuries, so they need secondary scoring to step up.
With the loss, the Devils are now 3-9-1 and have failed to win at least 3 games on this trip, so right now the hole becomes larger and larger. It will be up to them to unite as a unit to try and turn things around. Some players are already concerned about missing the playoffs, so they have to put a string of wins together to get the confidence back up. The month of November will have to be a big one, so tonight has to be one of the very few road blocks in their mission to turn this season around or heads will roll.
