After recalling winger Vladimir Zharkov yesterday, the Devils today assigned veteran forward Brian Rolston to Albany of the AHL. Lou Lamoriello also mentioned that Rolston will go on re-entry waivers tomorrow Wednesday at noon. If Rolston is claimed by another team once on re-entry waivers, the Devils will only be on hook for half of his $5.025 million dollar yearly salary against the Salary Cap.
Rolston was one of the names before the season started mentioned in possible trade rumors. He also has a no-trade clause, which affected the Devils chances of moving him easily. It is possible a team like the Leafs could claim him as they do have cap space and in a funny way, Rolston set up their first goal on Sunday night. Rolston did not practice with the team today and its likely Zharkov will play tomorrow against the Rangers at Prudential Center. It seems as if the Devils have started to clear cap space and possibly trade away disgruntled veterans for some prospects and draft picks.
