The trend of consecutive losses after a win continued today as the Devils dropped their 2nd straight game following their 3-0 win against the Phoenix Coyotes on Wednesday night. But tonight, the Devils outshot Atlanta 27-22 and lost 7-1 on an embarrassing outing by both goaltenders. What was even more disturbing is that the Devils allowed 3 goals to an enforcer by the name of Eric Boulton. Kane, Ladd, Hainsey and Thorburn had the other 4 goals. Ilya Kovalchuk scored a power play goal and the Devils lone goal in his 2nd return to Atlanta.
Now the question, Is this loss finally the one that gets John MacLean to get fired or for Lou to make a trade. Maybe it is time for a shake-up, it has been time for almost 2 months already. The past two games looked like mirror images of opening night and the Washington game in October. Yesterday's game much like opening night featured a post hit followed by an oppositions goal seconds later. Tonight was similar to the 7-2 loss at Washington on October 9th.
Martin Brodeur was pulled after the 4th goal and Hedberg did not fare any better. No fan base is more happy to see the Devils struggling more than the Atlanta Thrasher fans. In fact Kovalchuk was booed by the fans, but ironically, Hedberg was cheered and the Moose chants tonight were even louder than the ones in New Jersey. Hedberg should have started tonight. It seems that if Marty keeps playing like this, it would not shock me if he retires.
This loss was simply an embarrassment and probably felt like the Devils do not belong in the NHL.
