R.I.P 2010-2011 New Jersey Devils: Devils close out 2010 with a win over Thrashers

There has not been much to cheer for this year for Devils fans, but tonight's win was the 10th reason to do just that as the Devils finally earned their tenth win of the season. The Devils got goals from Mark Fayne, Jamie Langenbrunner and Ilya Kovalchuk for a 3-1 victory over the Atlanta Thrashers as the Devils avenged their 7-1 loss to them on December 18th. Dustin Byfuglien scored the lone Thrasher goal.

Johan Hedberg made 28 saves on 29 shots in the effort to end the 6 game bleeding for the Devils. The Devils scored 3 times on 28 shots against the Thrashers. It is their first 3 goal output since December 15 against Phoenix. Since then, they have only had one goal in 6 straight games. Hard to imagine, but true.

Let's now hope the Devils can throw away 2010 and their bad memories and get on a roll. But, it is looking more likely they will finish anywhere from 25-30th overall in league standings.

R.I.P 2010-2011 New Jersey Devils: Devils hoping to close out nightmare-ish and horror 2010 with a victory over the Thrashers, some injury updates

No NHL team is more happy to see 2010 go away than the New Jersey Devils even though the NHL season spans two numbered years. However, with playoffs out of question, the Devils are at least hoping to end what has been a nightmare type season so far with a win to close out 2010 and get a salvage the season type fresh start in 2011. Johan Hedberg will start in goal for the Devils against his former Atlanta team and the Devils will look to avenge their 7-1 loss to Atlanta on December 18th, almost two weeks ago.

The Devils will likely go with the same line-up tonight as they did against the Rangers. Nick Palmieri was returned to Albany today 24 hours after being called up. He was probably called up to fill in for some of the injured players in practice. Mark Fraser was assigned to Albany for conditioning. Brian Rolston is scheduled to skate today and will practice with the Devils sometime next week before returning to the line-up as a disgruntled veteran. Rolston said that the one year left on his deal next year was the deal breaker in teams not claiming him even though those teams had interest. Maybe, Lou Lamoriello will try to trade him before the deadline, but might have to trade additional pieces and draft picks to rid of Rolston.

Jacob Josefson is expected to start practicing again next week. He will see a doctor on Monday to get clearance. Parise and Bryce Salvador are still Lou's religious word "Status Quo." Parise was told to remain off skates until March even if his knee heels 100% in February. Salvador has only been working out off the ice, but is still a month or two away with post-concussion and concussion symptoms. Matt Taormina is on and off skating still and likely 3-4 weeks away from practicing or playing. The Devils will hopefully salvage their season by playing consistent in 2011 and carry that energy into 2011-2012.

R.I.P 2010-2011 New Jersey Devils: Earlybird 2011-2012 Preview

While the Devils are still not mathematically eliminated from playoff contention for this season, it is safe to say they will be sometime in February. I figure it is now time to get a small sneak into what might happen with the Devils in Summer 2011 and into next season.

Who will be the Devils coach in 2011-2012

There is a possibility Jacques Lemaire coaches the Devils again next season, but for now he is the interim coach for the remainder of the year and plans to go back into retirement after the season is over. If that is the case, Lou Lamoriello as I have mentioned will not rush his coaching search and will conduct an extreme and thorough search which could last weeks and months. There are those obvious candidates like Ken Hitchcock, Andy Murray, Bob Hartley, Mike Keenan, Michel Therrien. A dark horse candidate could be Senators GM Bryan Murray, who could show interest in returning to the coaching ranks and is good friends with Lamoriello. Murray coached Ottawa from 2005-2008 and was once the Anaheim Ducks GM, but returned to the coaching ranks in Ottawa before replacing John Muckler as GM in Summer 2007. Canadiens assistant and former Devil Kirk Muller, Blackhawks assistant Mike Haviland, Blue Jackets assistant Bob Boughner and Detroit assistants Paul MacLean and Brad McCrimmon could also get looks.

Will the Devils sign Parise to a long term extension?

Zach Parise is slated to become a Restricted Free Agent in Summer 2011 and an unrestricted Free Agent in Summer 2012. If he goes to arbitration, he will ask for a one-year-deal with lots of money. Once, he gets arbitration and does not sign an extension with the Devils, he is all but certain to leave them in 2012. Arbitration usually destroys the relationship between a GM, player and his representatives. Parise will be priority number 1 and 1A this summer for the Devils, even before the coach. Look for contract talks to pick up sometime in May. I believe the Devils resign him this summer to a long-term deal most likely upwards of 8-11 years, no salary will be mentioned. Although, the Devils missing the playoffs this year might affect Parise's chances to resign, but I believe he is the Devils future captain and is their face, not Kovalchuk.

Who do the Devils bring back or get rid of?

This is a debatable issue, but the Devils should not bring back captain Jamie Langenbrunner, he has not been the great leader and ever since he became the captain, his play has dropped. Andy Greene is 50-50, but he has regressed this year and right now is not a top 4 D-Men. He might not be a huge loss for the Devils. Jason Arnott is also 50-50, but I would not bring him back and try to develop Jacob Josefson into a second line center. If Brian Rolston stays with the Devils til the end of the year, I would try to trade him in the Summer since it might still be difficult to do so, but not as hard as now since his contract expires in 2012. Johan Hedberg and Adam Mair should not be brought back. The Devils need a goaltender capable of possibly replacing Marty in Brodeur continues to struggle or even decides to retire after this season. It is safe to say Marty's glory days are done and that maybe its time to sign, draft or trade for a goaltender that can pick up Brodeur's slack. Rod Pelley should also go or play in Albany next year as he has definitely regressed as well. David Clarkson should be given a chance to bounce back, but a lot will depend on his conditioning over the Summer. If he is out of shape, there is a good chance he might be a healthy scratch some games next year. The Devils should attempt to trade Colin White and Bring back Bryce Salvador. Matt Corrente, Mark Fraser, Anssi Salmela should all go or play in the minors. I would not mind Salmela as the 7th defenseman, but I think the role would be best suited for Alexander Urbom. Jon Merrill is likely going to stay in Michigan for one or two more years.

The Devils might end up having a Summer similar to the one the Montreal Canadiens had in 2009, where they got rid of almost everyone from their tumultuous 2008-2009 team which made the playoffs barely, but were swept in Round 1 by division rival Boston Bruins. The Canadiens that year had similar expectations to what the Devils had this year. But, at least they were able to fight through some adversity unlike the Devils, who cannot seem to get over it and the adversity deepens game after game.

How active will the Devils be in Free Agency?

Usually a non-playoff team would be very aggressive in Free Agency. However, in odd numbered Summer years Lou Lamoriello has usually stood pat and done nothing. This might be different this time around. With the Salary Cap rumored to rise another $2-3 million of sorts, the Devils might be a little bit more active than most people think. I see them trying to trade disgruntled veterans. The Devils should absolutely target Tomas Kaberle and Patrik Elias could be an intricate part of trying to lure him to New Jersey for the right price and if the salary cap would allow it. Again, Parise is priority number one. The emphasis this Summer is to try to get mobile puck moving defensemen who could occupy the point on the power plays and play a quick transition game. I believe the offense is fine itself, its just all about conditioning for them. Now, the Devils are on track for the number one overall pick, so they should likely select center Sean Couturier of the QMJHL.

What is the Devils projected line-up (with Kaberle):

Forwards:
Zach Parise, Travis Zajac, Dainius Zubrus
Ilya Kovalchuk, Sean Couturier, David Clarkson
Patrik Elias, Jacob Josefson, Mattias Tedenby
Alexander Vasyunov, Adam Henrique, Vladimir Zharkov
Extras; Nick Palmieri, Patrick Davis

Defense:
Chris Phillips, Anton Volchenkov
Henrik Tallinder, Tomas Kaberle
Bryce Salvador Andy Greene
Extras: Alexander Urbom, Eric Gelinas

Notes: It is probably not going to be the case, but this is a young line-up with not much to expect, but it can gel and click together. I think the Devils should make an attempt to reunite Volchenkov and Phillips.

R.I.P 2010-2011 New Jersey Devils: Rolston remains a Devil, goes unclaimed, Palmieri recalled from Albany

In what might seems as a shock, Brian Rolston went unclaimed on re-entry waivers and will remain with the New Jersey Devils for the time being. He will play likley next week. It seems as if teams thought he was not even worth half his $5.062 million dollar yearly salary. Rolston's contract expires in Summer 2012. Right now the Devils are eligible to trade him and Rolston would be willing to accept a deal to any team if asked to waive his no trade clause. There was rumored interest to claim him, but the danger of keeping him for another year worried those teams.

It also seems as if NHL GM's are unwilling to help the Devils cap situation, because the Kovalchuk saga has somewhat damaged the Devils and Lou Lamoriello's reputation around the league. A trade for Rolston is unlikely now since no team showed interest in claiming him for half salary, so who would take on his full yearly salary. So, the Devils will likely send him through a similar process in the near future this year.

Forward Nick Palmieri was called up by the Devils from Albany and practiced with the team today. There is no word whether he would play tomorrow at 5 PM against the Atlanta Thrashers. In 24 games with Albany this year, Palmieri has 6 goals and 5 assists and a plus 24 rating. Johan Hedberg will start in goal tomorrow night and give struggling Brodeur a rest. The Devils will look to avenge their December 18 7-1 blowout loss to Atlanta tomorrow night. Remember it is a 5 PM ET start time tomorrow, not 7 PM.

R.I.P 2010-2011 New Jersey Devils: Devils losing streak now at 6 games after 3-1 loss to Rangers

Despite their best effort in their last six games in this losing streak, the Devils fell to the Rangers at Prudential Center 3-1. The Devils outplayed the Rangers and outshot them 44-25, but again only converted one goal. Travis Zajac gave the Devils a 1-0 lead, but Brian Boyle scored seconds later to tie up the game as Marty Brodeur continues to let in soft goals. Michal Rozsival scored late int he 2nd to make it 2-1 Rangers and Brandon Dubinsky added an empty netter.

Henrik Lundqvist continues his mastery of the Devils and it probably would take a bad game by him to lose to the Devils. Or, the Devils themselves have to finally get to him, but based on the way things have been going this year for them, not even an effective shot or puck will go past him. Marty Brodeur seems like he is nearing the end of his storied career as he continues to let in weak goals and tonight was no exception. The Devils will play the Thrashers on Friday at Prudential Center and could see prospect Patrice Cormier, whom they traded in the Kovalchuk deal play for Atlanta.

The Devils have one win in the month of December which was a 3-0 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes two weeks ago. Right now it seems the Devils are on their way to the 1st overall pick in June's entry draft, which might be a good thing for them. It will be a pick that will likely lead the Devils into the next phase of their franchise. A win against Atlanta on Friday could probably salvage December for them.

We should know by noon tomorrow if Brian Rolston has been claimed by any NHL team. Remember, only half of his $5.062 million dollar yearly salary would count against the Devils salary cap until the end of next year if he is claimed. There is rumored interest in claiming him and trading for him if he is unclaimed. There is a small chance he plays for the Devils again this year.

R.I.P 2010-2011 New Jersey Devils: Devils vs Rangers tonight at Prudential Center in a meaningless rivalry match-up, Zharkov to play

A Rangers vs. Devils match-up usually ignites a flame as one of the most fierce rivalries in all of professional sports. However, tonight's game features two teams going in completely opposite directions. The Rangers are trending up to catch the Flyers and Penguins atop the Atlantic Division while the Devils are falling far and far behind as the league's worst team. Usually its the Devils finding ways to trend up and the Rangers at this time of the year are up and down. This is not the case tonight, sure it would be nice for the Devils to beat the Rangers, but I doubt there would be much excitement in the fan base other than the tide has turned in the match-up. At least for this year, Ranger fans can pick on Devils fans even if NJ wins tonight and the rest of the year games. The crowd tonight is likely to be comprised of more Ranger fans in probably a 60%-40% margin and that is just at Prudential Center.

The Rangers are coming off a 7-2 rout of the NY Islanders on Monday night while the Devils are in the midst of a five game losing streak by a combined score of 21-5. This is unacceptable by Devils standards, but with the way things have gone for the Devils so far, they might just have to focus on scoring plenty of goals and not worry about winning or losing the game. One thing the Devils could do is allow five goals, but in return how about scoring 3 or 4 just to gain offensive confidence.

As many of you already know, Brian Rolston was placed on re-entry waivers by the Devils at noon today and if claimed by another team, only half of his $5.062 million dollar yearly salary will count against the Devils cap as well as the new team that claims him. Rolston is hopeful someone claims him and there is rumored interest. We will not know until noon tomorrow if he has been claimed. If unclaimed, it is possible he could play for the Devils or their farm team in Albany. The Devils have given Rolston and his agent permission to seek a trade and Lou Lamoriello is also hopeful a deal can be worked out. If traded, Rolston's hefty salary will come off the Devils books. Brian is looking for a fresh start.

Many thought Rolston would fit nicely with the Devils as well as some top line firepower, but an early season sprained ankle derailed his career for the worse in October 2008. Rolston was unable to recover from it and his production and play dropped. With Rolston on re-entry waivers, he is unable to get traded until noon tomorrow and will not play tonight. This means Vladimir Zharkov will make his season debut for the Devils tonight against the Rangers. Zharkov has 10 career assists in the NHL with no goals. Hopefully, that changes for him this time around. He could be the spark the Devils need and a game changer.

R.I.P 2010-2011 New Jersey Devils: Devils assign Rolston to Albany, will go on re-entry waivers on Wednesday at noon

After recalling winger Vladimir Zharkov yesterday, the Devils today assigned veteran forward Brian Rolston to Albany of the AHL. Lou Lamoriello also mentioned that Rolston will go on re-entry waivers tomorrow Wednesday at noon. If Rolston is claimed by another team once on re-entry waivers, the Devils will only be on hook for half of his $5.025 million dollar yearly salary against the Salary Cap.

Rolston was one of the names before the season started mentioned in possible trade rumors. He also has a no-trade clause, which affected the Devils chances of moving him easily. It is possible a team like the Leafs could claim him as they do have cap space and in a funny way, Rolston set up their first goal on Sunday night. Rolston did not practice with the team today and its likely Zharkov will play tomorrow against the Rangers at Prudential Center. It seems as if the Devils have started to clear cap space and possibly trade away disgruntled veterans for some prospects and draft picks.

R.I.P 2010-2011 New Jersey Devils: Devils recall forward Vladimir Zharkov

Hoping to find some offensive sparks, the free-falling Devils recalled winger Vladimir Zharkov from Albany of the American Hockey League. It is unknown whether anyone was sent down to Albany, but Zharkov has joined the team today for practice. Very impressive for him to fins a way to make it in this snow. Zharkov has no career NHL goals in his partial rookie stint last year, but has 10 assists and was a plus 2 in +/- rating.

The Devils do not play until Wednesday night against the Rangers and are the most un-confident than they have ever been in their last 15 years. The Rangers would be a good team to beat just to start winning games with the playoffs 99.9% out of question. The Devils are 20 points out of a playoff spot and it would take a monumental comeback coupled with a monumental collapse from a current dominant team for them to get in, but that is unlikely with the way things are going. Right now, they look to be getting the #1 overall pick in the June entry draft and possibly select Center Sean Couturier. It is going to be an interesting rest of the season and summer to see how the Devils face lift is going to happen.

R.I.P 2010-2011 New Jersey Devils: Devils confidence shattered again as they fall to Maple Leafs

From now on all titles of my posts will start with R.I.P 2010-2011 New Jersey Devils until the end of the regular season. On a night where only about 5500 fans made it to the Prudential Center, the Devils made it known to them that they were better of staying home and shovel snow. The Devils dropped their 2nd straight game since firing coach John MacLean and are now 0-2 in Lemaire's 3rd stint as coach. Jonas Gustavsson looked strong in net for the Leafs making 29 saves as they defeated the Devils 4-1, so the blowout losing trends continue for the them. Colby Armstrong had two goals, John Mitchell and Nikolai Kulemin had the Leafs goals and Rod Pelley had the meaningless Devils lone goal.

The Devils started out well, but again it was all about missed opportunities including failing to capitalize on an early power play. The Devils went 1-5 on the power play as their 5 on 5 struggles continued. Johan Hedberg relieved struggling Marty Brodeur in the 3rd period which began with a 3-0 Leafs advantage. It was another typical Devils game. Look for Lemaire to change up the system in practice tomorrow and Tuesday.

The NHL roster freeze ends midnight tomorrow, so it is possible the Devils will start to accumulate prospects and draft picks and attempt to trade disgruntled veterans. Players like Brian Rolston, Bryce Salvador, Dainius Zubrus, Colin White, Jamie Langenbrunner, Jason Arnott, David Clarkson, Patrik Elias, Henrik Tallinder and even Brodeur could be moved. I might blog tomorrow about it being time to blow up the Devils roster.

Devils next coaching search could be a very lengthy one

Many people and hockey journalists wanted Lou Lamoriello to replace Jacques Lemaire this past summer before the Draft in June 2010. He did just that with John MacLean and supposedly MacLean was the only person interviewed for the position. Now that MacLean has not panned out as well as the Devils hoped, in fact he was a disaster as coach, Lou Lamoriello will likely take as much time as he needs to hire a coach, hopefully a long-term one over Summer 2011. Lamoriello will likely try to address his cap issues and Parise as well as free agency first before moving onto the coach.

It is very likely that Parise could be the next captain of the New Jersey Devils as early as next year if the Devils name one. The captaincy could be crucial to Parise accepting a long-term deal with the Devils. So, those of you expecting a coach before the Draft in June 2011 will likely have to wait. Lamoriello hired both Brent Sutter and re-hired Lemaire on July 13, 2007 and July 13, 2009 respectively. Sutter was hired on Friday the 13th, so that was sort of bad luck.

It is quite possible that a coaching decision will not be made until August 2011. There is a small possibility Lemaire could return for at least one more year next year, but for now he is only here for the remainder of the season. Like I mentioned in a previous post, it is a decision that Lou must think very carefully about, because the next coaching failure could likely force Lou to step down as GM and likely close an era of New Jersey Devils hockey not that that era has already started to close.

Devils star Zach Parise likely done for the year

This will be a short entry. It was just reported now by Lou Lamoriello that Zach Parise's return has been pushed back to mid-March at the earliest and he might not play again this season. Parise will only see the doctor again in March and will then only get clearance to skate. So, unless the Devils miraculously make the playoffs, Parise will likely return in mid to late March .

Parise's knee is healing fine and on schedule for a possible February return, but it might be a case where the doctor preferred Parise rest the knee for an extra month. The Doctor likely decided to er on the side of caution. Parise's injury was the biggest blow to the Devils chances of turning the season around back in early November when he suffered the injury. The Devils were not the same since and their goal scoring slumps continued.

Parise is recovering from a torn meniscus in his knee. He is slated to become a Restricted Free Agent this Summer 2011 and there has not been any dialogue for a contract extension yet. It is very crucial for the Devils to sign Parise to a long-term deal, but this time they have to be very careful not to circumvent the NHL salary cap like they did with Ilya Kovalchuk this past Summer or else consequences will be more severe. Other NHL Teams will line-up for offer sheets for his services. Once an offer sheet is signed, the Devils will have 7 business days to match the offer or lose Parise to that team. The Devils will be awarded huge compensation and multiple first round picks as well as second and third rounders from the team that signs him to that offer sheet. Based on their struggles this year, it will be very difficult for them to sign him to an extension, but I do not imagine Parise leaving the Devils. My guess something gets done in the summer and he should be priority number one.

Coaching Change: Same result, Devils routed by Islanders 5-1 in Lemaire's 3rd stint as coach

Forget the coaching change, the Devils played a predictable type of game an lost 5-1 as Brodeur continues to struggle and let in soft goals. Josh Bailey scored twice, John Tavares, Frans Nielsen, and Blake Comeau each had the other goals. Travis Zajac scored the Devils lone goal. Brodeur allowed 5 goals on 14 shots and Dwayne Roloson made 34 saves on 35 shots. The Devils played well in the 2nd half of the game, but an Islander short handed goal killed any chance of a comeback.

The Devils are now 0-4 against the New York teams this season and have been outscored 13-2 by both the Islanders and Rangers. The Rangers have outscored the Devils 6-1 in their two games and the Islanders 7-1. The Devils will not practice tomorrow and Saturday due to the holiday and NHL rules do not allow any practice time during December 24-25. The team could sure use some with Lemaire back.

MacLean's ouster was a long time coming and probably should have been made weeks ago, but it happened today. The Devils were reportedly asked by ownership not to go outside the organization for a new coach, so that is why Lemaire is back. However, the plan right now is for Lemaire to coach out the rest of the year and not beyond that. But, that could change depending on how the team salvages its season. Playoffs are still a possibility, but that is 100% out of question right now. They just have to win one game and build their confidence back up.

The next coaching decision in the summer will definitely define Lou's legacy as GM. Many thought MacLean would succeed with the type of team the Devils have had, but everything he tried would not work. Now Lou will be faced with the most important question, who is the right type of coach for this team. In my other blog post, I listed many candidates. It will likely be off that list. Jacques Lemaire could be back, but highly unlikely. We shall see how the Devils salvage their season.

Lemaire to coach team until the end of season and not beyond that, Possible coaching candidates for 2011-2012

Jacques Lemaire was only brought back to the Devils on an interim basis, which means he will coach out the rest of the year and not beyond that. Lemaire flew in to Jersey from Montreal today. Both Larry Robinson and Adam Oates will stay on as assistants. Now the question is, who will coach the Devils starting next year:

In no particular order of favorites:

Ken Hitchcock:

-He is an experienced NHL coach with one Stanley Cup in 1999 with Dallas. He is good friends with Lou Lamoriello and is similar to Jacques Lemaire in the sense that he preaches defensive responsibility. Hitch knows the Atlantic Division very well having coached the Philadelphia Flyers and can translate his success there to New Jersey. He would definitely be on Lou's top 3 list. The Knock on him is that he might not be a dynamic coach and that he can lose a locker room very quickly and that he might not be a long term solution. He coached very well in Columbus finally leading them into the playoffs, but he might not have been a good coach long term for a short tenured franchise like the Blue Jackets. Maybe with a veteran and world class franchise like the Devils, he can rediscover his coaching comfort zone.

Andy Murray

-Former St. Louis Blues and Los Angeles Kings coach has same defensive philosophy of what Lou Lamoriello would preach. He is a no nonsense coach and always has a sense of urgency face behind the bench. He got the Blues out of their playoff funk and led there despite all the injuries. However, the negative is that he has little playoff experience.

Bob Hartley

-Former Avalanche and Thrashers coach. He actually got the best out of Ilya Kovalchuk offensively and led the Thrashers to their 1st ever playoff berth. His greatest accomplishments were with the Colorado Avalanche in 2001 when he led them the Stanley Cup. However, he does have track record of losing control of the team.

John Anderson

-Former Thrasher coach, but unlikely for Devils. He know Ilya Kovalchuk, but the Devils need a team concept coach.

Mike Haviland

-Blackhawks assistant and New Jersey resident. He could be a perfect coach with no NHL head coaching experience. He works very well with young players and preaches an aggressive mentality. Obviously having won the Stanley Cup would help his resume. Actually wanted to be the Devils coach this past summer.

Ted Nolan

-Former Islanders coach, but he is very unpredictable as a coach.

Jay Woodcroft or Trent Yawney

-Current Sharks Assistants, Yawney is only one with NHL coaching experience with Blackhawks, but was fired in 2006. Woodcroft would be a fresh mind, but highly unlikely.

Paul MacLean or Brad McCrimmon

-Both Red Wings assistants, and with Todd McLellan, a former Red Wings assistant succeeding in San Jose, could be very good for the Devils. Paul MacLean could not be any worse than John MacLean and he coaches one of the best potent offenses in the NHL in Detroit and can get the best out of the most unexpected players. McCrimmon would also be a nice fit for the Devils.

Guy Carbonneau

-Former Canadiens coach and the Devils love the Montreal Connection when hiring a coach. But he has not proved much as a coach yet and could be very risky.

Mike Keenan

-One of the most respected hockey people around the NHL. He coached the Rangers to the 1994 Stanley Cup and has coached in Boston, Philly, Vancouver and Calgary among other places. He never considered himself to be a Devils coach in the future, but recently seemed to soften that stance. Definitely could happen. The knock on him could be his seriousness for the job. He seemed to have lost passion for coaching in Calgary. You never know what you can get with him.

Craig MacTavish

-A former Oilers coach and Rangers assistant. He knows the Atlantic Division very well and preaches defensive responsibility. Many thought he would already be hired somewhere and was one of the finalists for the Columbus job in the summer. He led the 8th seed Edmonton Oilers in 2006 to the Stanley Cup Finals, but lost in 7 games. That Oilers team had Chris Pronger on it, so he might be a viable option.

Other Candidates: (no order)

-Dave Lewis (former Red Wings and Bruins coach)
-John Torchetti (Thrasher Assistant)
-John Stevens (former Flyers coach and now Kings Assistant)
-Scott Stevens (long shot)
-Bob Francis (former Phoenix coach)
-Kirk Muller (Habs assistant)
-Kevin Dineen (Portland Pirates (AHL) coach)
-Rick Kowalsky (Devils minor league coach)
-Bob Boughner (Blue Jackets assistant)
-Scott Gordon (former Islanders coach)
-Benoit Groulx (Rochester (AHL) coach)
-Willie Desjardins (Dallas assistant)
-Craig Berube (Flyers assistant)
-John Paddock (former Sens coach)
-Craig Hartsburg (former Sens coach)
-Mike Sullivan (Rangers assistant)
-Jim Schoenfeld (Rangers assistant and former Devils coach in late 80s)

Devils finally fire rookie coach John MacLean, bring back Lemaire for third stint

Remember I told everyone that the number of days between games will not factor into Lou's decision to fire a coach, well boy I was right. The Devils are getting set to face the Islanders tonight in a basement battle and will do so with Jacques Lemaire behind the bench. John MacLean was fired early this morning 33 games into the season. It is uncertain if he will return for a full time basis, but he is back for 3rd stint as Devils coach. Lemaire was well respected by star winger Ilya Kovalchuk and maybe that factored into Lou's decision to bring him back.

Nevertheless, Lemaire retired from coaching after last season, but now he is back and will likely coach out the rest of the year. The Devils are currently 29/30 in the NHL standings and are 18-20 points out of a playoff spot, so they have to start winning. Though it is unlikely they will be able to catch up to the 8th spot, they at least can salvage their season in some way.

It is a tough start for John MacLean in his short coaching career in the NHL. He was an assistant since 2002 and was responsible for the 15 game win streak for the Devils in 2005-2006 season. The win streak was 11 straight to close out the regular season followed by a 4 game sweep of the rival Rangers in the 1st round of the playoffs. MacLean was the assistant to Lou Lamoriello, who coached the team that year. Many thought he could rediscover that magic this year after the Devils tumultuous start, but with every game, the Devils showed no signs of improvement. MacLean was not able to get the best out of his best players and the Devils are last in the league in goals scored and the defense is not contributing offensively.

Lemaire led the team to a 2nd place finish in the Eastern Conference last year, but again the Devils failed to show up in the playoffs en route to a 5 game series loss to the rival Flyers in Round 1. Many experts thought Lemaire lost passion for the game, but right now he has to salvage what is left of the season for the New Jersey Devils. So, here it goes again, Lemaire becomes the Devils 8th coach, but 4th different coach since the lockout ended.

Here is the list of Devils head coaches since the lockout:

2005: Larry Robinson
2005-2006: Lou Lamoriello (interim)
2006-2007: Claude Julien
2007: Lou Lamoriello (interim)
2007-2009: Brent Sutter
2009-2010: Jacques Lemaire
2010: John MacLean
2010-2011: Jacques Lemaire (interim)

-Julien was shockingly fired with 3 games left in the 06-07 season with the Devils 2nd in the eastern conference, but Lou felt the team was not mentally prepared for the playoffs.
-Robinson resigned in December 2005 due to migraines and family issues
-Sutter resigned to coach the Calgary Flames, since Calgary is near his Viking, Alberta home.

Devils could trade veterans to cup contenders as season free fall continues

Usually, the Devils are the team trying to pick up the pieces to try to win a Stanley Cup at this time of the year. Now, the tide is likely to turn as the team with the highest expectations before the season started is in the midst of their worst season in franchise history. Now, the question is, will the Devils become sellers by the trade deadline? Brian Rolston and Jason Arnott could be the likeliest of trade baits and the Devils could use 2nd or 3rd round picks and prospects for next year. The team still needs to address cap problems, so maybe a bad year could be better for them, because it makes addressing those problems somewhat easier.

Both Rolston and Arnott have no-trade-clauses, but they are veterans who might want to see some playoff action and could be headed to teams in contention for the Stanley Cup. A team like the Detroit Red Wings could use a Brian Rolston, since he is from Michigan and could be a guy who could play on one of their grinding lines. Jason Arnott could also be moved once again and maybe his former Dallas Stars team could be a good fit. Legendary Devils goaltender Marty Brodeur has told reporters, he has no intention of being traded, but the most unthinkable and unlikeliest of things could happen. Brodeur's trade value is diminished based on his stats this year, but it could bring the Devils a top end prospect and maybe even a future 1st round pick or multiple 2nd/3rd rounders.

The only untouchables from the Devils are Ilya Kovalchuk, Zach Parise, Travis Zajac, Mattias Tedenby, Jacob Josefson, Adam Henrique, Alexander Vasyunov, Vladimir Zharkov, Anton Volchenkov and Henrik Tallinder. Everyone else seems touchable even Andy Greene, who seems to have regressed this year. Greene has played well, but is missing his defensive partner Bryce Salvador, who could also be on the move. It should be an interesting few weeks for the Devils personnel decisions. So far, John MacLean is still the coach and is likely to remain the coach until the season ends. Beyond that we do not know.

Devils turmoil continues with 5-1 blowout loss to Capitals

If a team is going to follow up a 7-1 loss with another loss, it better be like 3-2, but for the Devils it was much similar to that. The Devils lost 5-1 to the Capitals at Verizon Center in Washington and played similar to the way they have been playing all year long. Andrew Gordon, Jay Beagle, Jason Chimera, John Carlson, and Mike Knuble scored for the Capitals while Patrik Elias converted for the Devils on the power play which continues to be the only positive for the Devils. The Devils have not scored a 5 on 5 goal since last Wednesday's win against Phoenix.

The Devils outshot the Capitals 36-28, but again only got one goal. The Devils losses have been coming in only scoring one goal in most of those games this year. With the Devils very likely or definitely to miss the playoffs, now the question becomes what can they do to salvage the season? Is John MacLean on his way out finally or how does he still have a job? We do not know the answers. Lou Lamoriello will have a tough evaluation coming up after the Roster Freeze, but the freeze itself does not apply to coaches.

The Devils actually played well in the first and half of the second, but then things started to unravel and more exposure by the Devils. So, once again, it seems like Lou Lamoriello has already conceded this year and probably is thinking a major shake-up would not change anything. We shall see what happens, but a coaching change could be a good start to try to salvage what is left of a miserable and mystifying year for the New Jersey Devils hockey club which is on pace to finish 29/30. The only good thing about it is they get a top 5 pick from it.

Devils face Capitals tonight in a match-up of two desperate teams

There could have been a lot of different elements in tonight's Capitals vs Devils match-up, the biggest being that we could have seen two new coaches behind each bench. However, that has not happened as Bruce Boudreau and John MacLean are still coshing their respective teams. The Capitals struggles are coinciding with the HBO Hard Knocks type series 24/7 on them and the Pittsburgh Penguins, who are also somewhat losing, but defeated the Coyotes yesterday 6-1.

The Capitals snapped their 8 games losing streak on Sunday night in Ottawa by winning 3-2 and rallying from a 2-0 deficit. The Devils will seek to avenge their 7-2 loss to the Capitals on October 9th at Verizon Center. Also, the Devils are coming off an embarrassing loss to the Thrashers 7-1 on Saturday, so tonight should be more of a defensive effort. But, knowing the Capitals, they are poised for an offensive explosion while the Devils offense is still sleeping.

Anssi Salmela will be a healthy scratch tonight and Matthew Corrente will be inserted in to the line-up. Disgruntled coach John MacLean thought about going with 11 forwards and seven defensemen, but chose to go with 12 and 6. Struggling goaltender Martin Brodeur will start for the Devils.

Beleaguered rookie coach John MacLean shakes up Devils lines, Corrente recalled

It seems as if John MacLean will remain the Devils coach for the rest of the season, simply because Lou Lamoriello has had every chance to let him go and has not done so. John MacLean changed up his struggling group of forwards today in practice and the only line combination's are Elias Zajac Langenbrunner, which is the only untouched line, Kovalchuk Sestito Tedenby, Rolston Zubrus Mair and Pelley Arnott and Clarkson. Based on these projections, Arnott and Kovy are playing on 3rd and 4th line caliber lines. It seems this is the latest desperate act by the beleaguered rookie coach.

While Lou Lamoriello has not given MacLean his endorsement, it seems as if he will not answer any questions about MacLean's job status. This likely means that he still has faith in MacLean and the coaching staff, but will not say it. Lamoriello has been adamant that the teams struggles are player related and that he thinks they have to turn things around before focusing on the coach. The Devils biggest problem is that they are spending too much time in their end and have no puck movers on defense, so that is one area that they have to address via a trade or over the summer in free agency.

The question is why Lou has waited so long and still not fired MacLean? One of the answers is mentioned above. Another answer is that Lamoriello might want to wait til the injury and cap problems get sorted out before making his move, but who know how long that will take. One thing is certain the Kovalchuk Saga has affected the team and has damaged the Devils and Lamoriello's reputation throughout the league at least for this year and the Devils have to pay for it with their struggling play. Maybe its better the Devils miss the playoffs to give Lamoriello the summer to address and clean out the team's problems. I would not be shocked if MacLean coaches next season as well despite no system.

The Devils once again recalled defenseman Matthew Corrente and Martin Brodeur will start in Washington. Brodeur will seek redemption from an abysmal start in Washington back in the second game of the regular season when he was pulled and the team lost 7-2. If the Devils are to show the same effort tomorrow than they did against Atlanta on Saturday, it will definitely not help John MacLean's cause. But yet again, Lou will likely continue to remain quiet about questions to his job status and will only say his favorite "Status Quo" phrase. So, Lou has likely given him a quiet stamp of approval.

The Capitals yesterday defeated the Senators 3-2 to snap an 8 game losing streak. HBO Cameras will be in attendance tomorrow to film the 24/7 documentary for the Capitals leading up to the Winter Classic on January 1st in Pittsburgh against the Penguins.

Devils suffer embarrassing loss to Thrashers in Atlanta, Kovalchuk scores lone goal, Boulton gets first career hat trick

The trend of consecutive losses after a win continued today as the Devils dropped their 2nd straight game following their 3-0 win against the Phoenix Coyotes on Wednesday night. But tonight, the Devils outshot Atlanta 27-22 and lost 7-1 on an embarrassing outing by both goaltenders. What was even more disturbing is that the Devils allowed 3 goals to an enforcer by the name of Eric Boulton. Kane, Ladd, Hainsey and Thorburn had the other 4 goals. Ilya Kovalchuk scored a power play goal and the Devils lone goal in his 2nd return to Atlanta.

Now the question, Is this loss finally the one that gets John MacLean to get fired or for Lou to make a trade. Maybe it is time for a shake-up, it has been time for almost 2 months already. The past two games looked like mirror images of opening night and the Washington game in October. Yesterday's game much like opening night featured a post hit followed by an oppositions goal seconds later. Tonight was similar to the 7-2 loss at Washington on October 9th.

Martin Brodeur was pulled after the 4th goal and Hedberg did not fare any better. No fan base is more happy to see the Devils struggling more than the Atlanta Thrasher fans. In fact Kovalchuk was booed by the fans, but ironically, Hedberg was cheered and the Moose chants tonight were even louder than the ones in New Jersey. Hedberg should have started tonight. It seems that if Marty keeps playing like this, it would not shock me if he retires.

This loss was simply an embarrassment and probably felt like the Devils do not belong in the NHL.

After loss to Nashville, Devils face surging Atlanta Thrashers

When Ilya Kovalchuk was traded to the Devils last year, many thought the Thrashers would get worse with nothing to play for. However, it is the Thrashers who won the short term end of the trade. Kovalchuk has struggled with the Devils, while everyone else involved in the deal has played reasonably well. Now, the Thrashers did change the nucleus of their team by acquiring 5 cup winners from the Blackhawks in Dustin Byfuglien, Brent Sopel, Ben Eager, Akim Aliu, and Andrew Ladd.

Byfuglien is looking like a Norris Trophy candidate with his play on defense and has been a hit in Atlanta. But, a win for the Devils in Atlanta tonight could be huge for their psyche and might be the win to get them on a small streak. Nevertheless, tonight will be Kovalchuk's second return to Atlanta since the trade. Last year he had no shots on goal against the Thrashers, but the Devils shutout Atlanta 3-0. Should be an interesting game tonight and very emotional between two teams heading in opposite directions.

Devils hoping to finally get on a roll despite being too far behind

It seems likely that the Devils will miss the playoffs this year, but it cannot stop them from trying to put together a long winning streak. After snapping their 5 game skid on Wednesday night against the Phoenix Coyotes, the Devils face the pesky and physical Predators squad tonight. This will be Jason Arnott's first game against his former Predators team. Arnott served as the captain for the Predators for the past few seasons.

Also, looking to build on Wednesday's game are Ilya Kovalchuk and Martin Brodeur. Kovalchuk had two goals and most are hoping he will finally get going. Brodeur had a shutout, but even going back to last year, he has not fared well in games following a shutout. The Devils will dress the same line-up that played Phoenix on Wednesday, so it should be a fun game.

Once again the holiday roster freeze is midnight Sunday until midnight December 27th, when it is lifted. The Devils might make a move by then to try to improve the team, but it is likely that Lou Lamoriello will not change a thing despite the team's struggles.

Kovalchuk breaks out with 2 goals, Fayne scores 1st career NHL goal as Devils shutout Coyotes 3-0

Everyone was probably predicting a blowout Devils loss tonight, because that is how things have been going with them, but the Devils again out on one of their best defensive displays this year with a 3-0 victory over the Coyotes. Ilya Kovalchuk had his first 2 goal game as a Devil and defenseman Mark Fayne scored his first NHL goal. Martin Brodeur made 29 saves on 29 shots for the shutout and Ilya Bryzgalov made 26 saves on 29 shots.

Kovalchuk scored his second goal on a 5 on 3 power play, so good to see that work for the Devils. It was only a 15 second 5 on 3, so the Devils made the most of it. The win snaps the Devils 5 game losing streak and they are now 9-19-2 and still a long way to go. Here is something interesting, Kovalchuk's wife Nicole was in the crowd today, so it obviously gave him some relief. Ilya was away the whole year from his family and has not seen them this year, so the kids and Nicole came up.

Anssi Salmela played his first game of the season today and looked rusty and tentative in the defensive zone, but looked good in terms of moving the puck. Mark Fayne's goal was originally credited to Langenbrunner, but was later switched to Fayne. Elias had two assists in the game and leads the Devils in points this season. So, overall a good effort for the Devils today, who had a fast start instead of a slow one like against Montreal and Detroit. Hopefully this is the game that gets Ilya Kovalchuk going and hopefully his wife could stay up in NJ forever and provide some inspiration to him.

Brian Rolston is the line-up as Devils get set to face Coyotes

Brian Rolston was unclaimed by another team as he cleared waivers at noon today. He will be in the line-up against the Phoenix Coyotes at Prudential Center tonight. The Devils will also have Anssi Salmela back from injury. Rolston and the Devils knew it was very unlikely he would have gotten claimed due to his $5.025 million dollar yearly salary. Rolston's contract expires after next season.

Martin Brodeur will start in net for the Devils. It is not yet know who will do so for the Coyotes. It will be either Ilya Bryzgalov or Jason LaBarbera. The Devils will look to finally end their losing skid and again try to start a winning streak something they have failed to really build on this season. It is fair to say the Devils will not be making the playoffs this year, but they can at least start winning games, because you never know what the standings might look like later this season.

Devils place Brian Rolston on waivers, Salmela to play against Phoenix, Lamoriello admits being too patient

In a small act of desperation to try to get under the NHL's salary cap, the struggling New Jersey Devils have placed struggling forward Brian Rolston on waivers. If Rolston is claimed, the Devils would rid themselves of $5.025 Million dollars in yearly salary, but if not, Rolston is expected to play tomorrow against Phoenix. If Rolston were assigned to the minors, his salary would still count against the cap, because he is over the age of 35, but if recalled on re-entry waivers and claimed, the Devils would only pay half of his salary. It is unlikely he would get claimed, but Lou Lamoriello would not specify what would happen beyond him clearing waivers tomorrow at noon if nobody picks him up.

Lou Lamoriello admitted being too overly patient and somehow thought the team would get out of its funk sooner, but failed miserably and are falling too far behind in the race for the 8th and final playoff spot. It seems as if Lou Lamoriello has started the process of trying to make the team better, but it will be a slow process due to the numbers in trade-able player contracts. They are currently 18 points out with no looming hope of at least starting to win games. The Devils in my mind will miss the playoffs, but they can make the fans somehow happy and start winning games. As I mentioned it is only a matter of time before MacLean gets the axe, when it happens nobody know though Lou somehow is still standing by the coach, but the fans are not. Number of days off between games will not factor into Lou's decision to fire the coach, so whether its less than a day, 24 hours, 3 days, a week, it will make no difference to Lou.

Defenseman Anssi Salmela will make his return to the Devils line-up tomorrow night against Phoenix. He will wear #29, the same number he wore last year. Salmela is coming off a torn ACL and Meniscus and had off-season surgery to repair the knee. He will be paired with Anton Volchenkov. Salmela is a puck mover, but not a great puck mover. He is expected to somewhat help the Devils struggling power play. The Devils also recalled center Tim Sestito for a second time. It is expected that center Jacob Josefson will soon return as well by the end of the month.

Number of days off between games will not factor whether Lou fires MacLean or Not or makes a trade

Many of you might think that 3 days off in between games might be appropriate for Lou Lamoriello to make a coaching change. It is very smart to fire a coach in a situation like this, but in Lou's world things are run different. Which means, he can fire a coach before a morning skate or the day before. Now it is probably evident that MacLean will likely coach out the season, it is a possibility that he could get fired should the Devils lose to Phoenix. The Devils have been booed constantly in the past few games at "The Rock" but it still has not reached up to Lou.

Lou will get things done at random times. After all, when he traded for Kovalchuk last year, Kovy only had a morning skate to prepare for his Devils debut. It says the same for the coach. So, many of you should not use the three days off or even a week off for a window to make a coaching change. Even though it makes sense in reality to do so with as many days off, it is not in Lou's definition. Simply put, the Devils can lose to the Predators on Friday and MacLean could get fired Saturday morning hypothetically speaking. MacLean is still on life support as Devils coach and whether he gets fired today, tonight or in the near future, the number of days off between will not factor into Lou's decision. It is the timing, even though its way too late now, but for the sake of making Devils fans somewhat happy, a coaching change may be necessary.

Lou Lamoriello continues "Status Quo" Nonsense, season is lost on his part

We can all accept that the Devils will not be making the playoffs this season, but if they want to start winning or salvaging their season, they will likely have to do it with their current roster and coaching staff. It seems that nothing has changed with Lou from last weeks stance on staying the course. Lamoriello today reaffirmed his status quo philosophy and said that the focus is on Phoenix, which is understandable, but again this team is in a crisis and MacLean is a terrible coach, so something has to give.

It seems that Lou wants to wait til the team gets healthy meaning when Parise returns before he make his move. By then the team will already be out of playoff contention for sure, now that they are not already at this current moment. But, Lou Lamoriello along with Darcy Regier of Buffalo are the most conservative GM's in all of hockey. Today's news has definitely proved that Lou Lamoriello has given up on the year. But, to continue staying the course will not work with this team. A coaching change would have at least sent a message, but he is not preaching accountability with his Status Quo BS.

--------

It seems as if defenseman Anssi Salmela might play Wednesday against Phoenix and make his return from a knee injury. Matt Corrente and Alexander Vasyunov were assigned to Albany.

Devils having tough time succeeding in Salary Cap era, may need culture change

Before the lockout in 2004, the Devils were considered one of the NHL's elite franchises with expectations to go to the finals each year. The Devils won three Stanley Cups in 1995, 2000, and 2003, but since then, the team has struggled advancing past round two in the playoffs and have not been there since 2003 when they actually won the cup. Playoff success is what defines a great NHL team usually, but personnel decisions also apply to these teams.

The Devils demise started after their Game 7 loss in the 2001 Stanley Cup Finals in my view. That summer 2001, the Devils lost their leading scorer in Alexander Mogilny to the Toronto Maple Leafs. Mogilny led the team with 43 goals and the Devils offense suffered dearly that year. In Summer 2002, the Devils lost their best special teams player in Bobby Holik to the rival NY Rangers. But, somehow despite having trouble scoring goals, they found creative ways to win and won the cup. During the off-season, the Devils lost their motivating factor in Ken Daneyko as he retired. But, the following year, the team suffered the most significant blow, when in mid-season, captain Scott Stevens suffered post-concussion symptoms. It was an injury that affected the Devils mental state. The injury ended Stevens' career as he would retire post lockout. The Devils were eliminated in the 1st round by the Flyers.

During Summer 2005, the Devils lost core defenseman Scott Niedermayer, who plays a crucial part in their special teams and all around game. It was that summer when Lou Lamoriello was forced to severely over spend on players like Alexander Mogilny, who was brought back on a 2 year/$7 million dollar contract. Mogilny would not live up to it though as he re-injured his arthritic hip, which affected him in Toronto. He did have 12 goals and 11 assists at the time, but his numbers did not translate to the game on the ice. Mogilny was sent to the minors in December 2005. Another player was Vladimir Malakhov, who signed a 2 year/$7.2 million dollar deal and he would be suspended for disagreeing with Lou when he took over for Larry Robinson that year as coach. Finally, there was Dan McGillis, who's contract was not bad, but he struggled and was also demoted. They managed to get into the 2nd round of playoffs, but fell to the eventual champion Hurricanes.

In 2006-2007, the Devils were flying high despite having trouble scoring goals under then coach and current Boston coach Claude Julien. Julien was fired with three games left in the season and Lou Lamoriello coached the team through the playoffs. Summer 2007 was also a nightmare for the team. They lost Scott Gomez and Brian Rafalski to the Rangers and Red Wings respectively. They did not have a 1st round pick because they gave it to San Jose along with the Malakhov contract, so it was much like the current more severe Kovalchuk situation right now. The Devils fell in Round 1 to Gomez and the Rangers.

In Summer 2008, the Devils brought back Brian Rolston on a 4 year deal worth almost $21 million dollars, but an ankle injury that year derailed his career up to now as he has not got back into his rhythm. And the rest is history, the year which was hopeful ended in the most crushing playoff defeat ever in the hands of the Carolina Hurricanes. And since that, the Devils have never been the same. So, you see the cap era has brought more nightmare's to the Devils than success despite the regular season success they exhibited. That brought the end to the Brent Sutter era in Jersey. Last season was low expectations, but yet again they could not establish consistency come playoff time. This season will take a huge miracle to turn it around, if the Devils plan was to suck in the first half and dominate the second, whatever it is it's not working and they a re playing like garbage with little clues from GM Lou Lamoriello about improving the team.

Now, that begs the question, do the Devils need a culture change? In my belief I think this year is finally the beginning of the end of the Lou Lamoriello era. It would not surprise me if Marty Brodeur retires. John MacLean's status is unknown, but he will be gone if not this season, but very likely in the summer. But, Lou Lamoriello has been the most conservative and quiet GM in hockey and has not really opened up too much to the media. I believe it is time for him to step down and let the Devils start fresh. Parise is crucial to the team, so they should sign him long-term. It will be very interesting to see what pick they will get in the draft, but its looking more likely it will be a top 5 pick. Hopefully, he pans out well. But, Lou Lamoriello should really evaluate himself more thoroughly or else he will destroy the New Jersey Devils both mentally and psychologically. It should be a very interesting transformation phase for the Devils after this season.

Devils prospects shine in Big Chill as Michigan and Michigan State take it outside

Roughly 113,000 fans watched today's match-up between Michigan and Michigan State at the Big House at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbour. If there is one positive for Devils fan is that the future looks bright in terms of prospects. Defenseman Jonathan Merrill scored two goals in the game and Defenseman Brandon Burlon had two assists and David Wohlberg had a goal in UM's 5-0 rout over MSU.

All three are not expected to play for the Devils at least until the 2012-2013 season, although all made strong cases to compete for spots next year. Merrill has made along-term commitment to his development at Michigan. Burlon and Merrill were 2nd round picks in 2008 and 2010 respectively. Wohlberg was a 6th round pick by the Devils in 2008. But that is the only positive Devils fans had tonight, but again the season turmoil continued tonight with no sign of turning anything around.

Devils disastrous season continues after 4-1 loss to Red Wings at Prudential Center, now 8-19-2

Right now it seems as if the Devils players had given and have already quit on coach John MacLean. Tonight's game was very similar to the Montreal Canadiens game last Thursday night, where the Canadiens struck twice early and never looked back. The Red Wings got two quick goals fro, Tomas Holmstrom and Daniel Cleary and also from Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk in a 4-1 rout of the Devils. Patrik Elias scored the lone Devils goal on a power play early in the third period, but it was too late. Chris Osgood made 33 saves on 34 shots, while Brodeur made 19 saves on 23 shots.

Again, there was very little caring by the Devils as they never really got in the match despite the shot disparity. The Devils have lost 5 straight and have really not had a good run this season. Was tonight's game finally the one that will bring massive changes to the Devils including a coaching change, which is reality right now. It is unlikely the Devils will practice tomorrow, but Monday could bring those changes or even tomorrow. Those changes better be done quickly before next Sunday's trade freeze or else they will have to stay the course until 12:01 AM December 28th, where the losing will likely continue.

Devils vs Red Wings tonight at Prudential Center, Is this finally MacLean's last stand as coach? Rafalski returns.

It is Saturday, December 11th, 2010, we are exactly 8 days away from the NHL Holiday Roster Free or Christmas trade freeze as many call it. Will the Devils make changes before then to improve their team or will they continue to stay the course? Lou Lamoriello has been very adamant about staying the course in the past few days, but was evasive with questions about John MacLean. The Devils sit 15 points away from the 8th spot in the Eastern Conference and tonight they face the highly skilled and octane Detroit Red Wings at Prudential Center. So, again will changes be made after tonight, because if they do stay the course, it is a bad course to stay on. John MacLean has not been assured anything for now, but should the Devils lose again tonight and probably will lose tonight, fans will definitely chant fire MacLean and will do so if they get off to a rough start.

The Devils lost last nights game on a controversial no goal call from Toronto. They probably did get screwed by the league, but it was not the reason they lost. MacLean said they should have scored early and often. The Devils continue to get off to slow starts and are always playing catch-up. I think when push comes to shove, the Devils will have to fire John MacLean and hopefully Lou Lamoriello realizes that very soon preferably after tonight. Even a win might not be enough to save MacLean's job especially if the team shows up flat, which is expected after the emotions at the end of last nights game against Ottawa.

Tonight's game will mark the return of former Devil Brian Rafalski to New Jersey. He missed last years game due to injury, so it will be his first game against the Devils. Rafalski signed a 5 year $30 million dollar deal with the Red Wings in Summer 2007 and won the Stanley Cup that year in 2008. He is multiple Norris Trophy Winner Nicklas Lidstrom's defensive partner and they are considered on of the best defensive pairings in the NHL along with Seabrook and Keith of Chicago.

Devils lose 4th straight after 3-2 defeat in the hands of Senators on controversial no goal

As bad as the Devils season has been this year, it got worse tonight after they could not catch a break on controversial no goal at the end of the game. David Clarkson had what appeared to be the game tying goal with a little over 2 minutes left and what could have been the Devils 3rd power play goal, but the NHL ruled that there was a kicking motion and had the puck touched his stick en route to the net, it would have been a goal. While there was no kicking motion in my view, the latest call just sums up the Devils season which is now at 8-18-2. The Devils are in free fall with no signs of any improvement despite another good but short effort.

Martin Brodeur made 26 saves on 29 shots in the 3-2 loss in his return from injury. Pascal Leclaire made 29 saves on 31 Devils shots. The Devils went 2-3 on the power play, which continues to improve on the road, but its still not enough for them to get out of the funk. Elias and Zubrus scored the Devils goals, while Karlsson, Ruutu, and Michalek for the Senators. This is not the loss the Devils wanted to have with the tough test coming up against the Red Wings tomorrow night. Now the questions about MacLean and the team will continue after the loss as TSN's Darren Dreger was reporting that the losing coach could face major consequences.

Ilya Kovalchuk had a post, but also had 2 assists, so his point total continues to increase. But, again the team in front of him continues to struggle. So, we shall see what happens in the next 48 hours with the team regardless of the result tomorrow against Detroit although a loss would probably seal MacLean's fate as coach and some players will probably be moved. A win might also not mean much especially with Lou not giving his full endorsement of MacLean.

After an uncertain three tumultuous days, Devils get set to face Senators, (Devils cannot think about playoffs, just have to win), Kovy takes blame

After a tumultuous three grueling days of practice and uncertainty to the make-up of the roster, the Devils are getting set to face the Ottawa Senators in Ottawa tomorrow night in a battle of two struggling teams. Martin Brodeur will make his return from a deep bruised elbow to start in goal and will likely start against the explosive Red Wings on Saturday night as well. The last time the Devils faced a struggling franchise, it was a nightmare blemish against the Islanders, losing 2-0, so they do not want to take Senators lightly. Every game from tomorrow night on is a must win game for the team.

The uncertainty of the past three days was whether John MacLean was going to be fired, well he was not. MacLean is safe for at least the next two games. Many around the locker room are expecting GM Lou Lamoriello to make a trade, even though Lou has not admitted whether he is working on a deal or not. Lamoriello did not endorse coach John MacLean or say whether he will make a deal. This is typical Lou talk as he usually is very secretive about his business and player personnel decisions. But, with the Christmas trade freeze a little over a week away on December 19 at midnight, it is imperative the Devils break out of their offensive slump, otherwise major changes will be made. The freeze runs through midnight December 27th, so it seems very likely the Devils will make a move. If they want to deal with the Toronto Maple Leafs, they will have to do it by midnight tonight December 9th, because Leafs GM Brian Burke's freeze is midnight tonight unlike the NHL's.

Speaking of the Devils playoff chances, it is safe to say, the Devils cannot think about making or missing the playoffs, they simply have to win consecutive games. During the 2005-2006 season, the Devils trailed the Atlantic division leading rival Rangers by 19 points at one point, but rallied to win the division in the end. In fact, they won the division in the last game of the year. That night, the Devils defeated the Canadiens 4-3, the Rangers fell to the Senators, and the Flyers won their game, but the Devils had the tie-breaking scenario with Philly. So, this year it might be the same for the Devils in regards to the 7th or 8th spot as some team(s) hopefully begin to struggle and fall out. Winning the Atlantic is no longer a possibility. But, as I said they cannot think about the playoffs, they just have to put together a streak of wins and take it one game at a time. Most of all, they have to score goals at large amounts. If you allow 5 and lose, you at least want to score 3 or 4, not 1 like the Devils have been doing.

Ilya Kovalchuk today is the latest Devil to take blame for the teams struggles. Brian Rolston admitted not living up to his contract about a month ago and is still not living up to it. Kovalchuk is having a tough year offensively with only 5 goals and 6 assists. Many people around hockey expect him to explode very soon and when he does, the Devils hopefully will follow suit. But, they cannot wait for him to break out, they have to break out as a team.

Tomorrow nights game will mark the return of Anton Volchenkov to Ottawa. Volchenkov left Ottawa this past summer to join the Devils. He admitted, he would be nervous, but good nervous. Volchenkov has been one of few bright spots for the struggling Devils this season since he returned from a mild concussion, broken nose and sore-neck. Next Saturday, Kovalchuk will return to Atlanta as a member of the Devils for the second time. Last time, the Devils defeated the Thrashers 3-0, but a nervous Kovalchuk had no shots on goal and was uneventful, much like he is this year so far.

The Devils today placed forward Stephen Gionta and Defenseman Olivier Magnan-Grenier on waivers and assigned defenseman Anssi Salmela to Albany for conditioning. If Magnan and Gionta clear waivers, they will be assigned back to Albany. Salmela is only allowed to be in Albany for maximum two weeks, but is expected to be activated of IR very shortly. Both Gionta and Grenier struggled as the Devils did for the most part. Gionta has no points, but has 5 penalty minutes so far this season. These moves likely mean Alexander Vasyunov is going back into the line-up tomorrow night. There is also a strong possibility Vladimir Zharkov could be called up from Albany very soon. Zharkov has been playing well and recently has been on a tear in the AHL. He has no goals in the NHL during his stint last year with the Devils.

John MacLean's job as I mentioned is probably still in jeopardy, but is safe for at least the next two games. After Detroit Saturday night, the Devils so not play until Wednesday against the Phoenix Coyotes at Prudential Center. That would give Lou a three day window to relieve MacLean of his coaching duties or make a trade if he thinks the time is right and the move is right for the sake of bettering the team, which has always been his philosophy. A coaching change would likely have to be made Sunday or Monday to give the new coach at least two practice days. Some of the players which could be moved are Jamie Langenbrunner, Brian Rolston, Dainius Zubrus, Patrik Elias, Travis Zajac, Colin White, Bryce Salvador (even though he is injured), Anssi Salmela and David Clarkson.

Devils, Fans must accept strong possibility of missing the playoffs and no 2nd round for 4th straight year

As tough as it may seem to sink in much like the 2009 Round 1 defeat in the hands of the Carolina Hurricanes, the Devils and their fans might have to accept a failed season. While the regular season is not over until early April, the Devils are currently 15 points out of the 8th and final playoff spot and the top 8 are taking huge strides in separating themselves from the bottom 7. It will be Mission: Impossible for the Devils to catch up to that gap, but it is doable never the less.

The Devils have had so little positives happen this year to at least give the fans some hope to get out their slump. Mattias Tedenby's play has been one of few bright spots. Many fans like me are shocked that the Devils are in this position, because many though the Devils would be a top 4 team in the conference, but with the way players develop and systems are these days, it is all about speed and skill and going to the net. The Devils do not have most of these elements.

You would think that the return of Jason Arnott, Ilya Kovalchuk and signing Volchenkov and Tallinder would be a good thing, but it was not. Volchenkov is playing well, Tallinder and Kovalchuk are not, and Arnott is up and down. They are struggling to score goals, but with the type of off-season the Devils had, all other 29 teams are ganging up on them and bringing their A-game as well as the Devils taking some of their opponents lightly.

To me it would be tough to accept this reality, but on the bright side it would give the Devils a strong reality check and message that they are not as good as they seem and that they would have to increase their work ethic. If they finish 30 out of 30, they would be guaranteed a top 5 pick in the draft and it hopefully would bring them skill that they have lacked. It might not be a bad thing if the Devils miss the playoffs.

I will say this though, this team will be better next year regardless of how this year ends. There will be less distractions and expectations will be very low and that is when the Devils play at their best. Hopefully, everyone will be healthy and held more accountable. It seems as if most Devils fans cannot wait for this year to end, but what happens is out of our control. If the team misses the playoffs, radical changes could commence and hopefully it will be for the better. But, simply put the Devils cannot dwell on their past failures for very long and clear their minds and clean their slate and focus and recharge for next year.

Lamoriello focused on Ottawa and Detroit, not changes or personnel moves

Those fans frustrated with the Devils play this season and expecting Lou to make drastic changes will have to wait at least until after the Detroit game on Saturday night. Devils GM Lou Lamoriello told reporters today that the Devils will use the same line-up that played against Pittsburgh on Monday in Ottawa on Friday night. He also did not give John MacLean a vote of confidence, but the fact that he is still the coach seems to be an indication that he somehow did. Basically, no trades or coaching changes will be made until at least the Detroit game. Lamoriello is focused on Ottawa and Detroit.

Many Devils players were prepared to be traded before the season started, but injuries gave the Devils some salary cap relief. However, the salary cap mess has also been a distraction on the ice. Should the Devils lose the next two games, who knows what will happen? Lou Lamoriello was mum on any possible changes, but he has taken full responsibility for the teams play this year thus far, which is predictable Lou. He still believes the 8-17-2 record is the player's fault, but in my opinion they just do not have the right coach. If they are playing not to lose, something has to change.

The Christmas trade freeze takes effect on Midnight of next Sunday, December 19 and runs through midnight December 27th. This means that no team would be allowed to make any moves in that period. So, many fans should expect Lou to shake-up things in some manner. While, Lou calls MacLean's job security pure speculation, many believe that a change will come behind the bench even if the team does get on some kind of roll this season. The BOG meetings in Florida definitely saved MacLean's job since Lou did not have time to evaluate things more thoroughly. Another thing on MacLean's side is the number of coaches the Devils had since the lockout, so maybe he is here for the long haul.

------

Here is an update on some injured players:

-Anssi Salmela (Cleared to play, should go to Albany on conditioning soon, will likely return in early January)

-Bryce Salvador (Light workouts, no timetable, seems as if he will be out til February or trade deadline)

-Jacob Josefson (Got cast off, now working out off ice, should be back in early January)

-Zach Parise (out til February)

-Matt Taormina (light skating, no timetable for return)

Kovalchuk saga continuing to backfire on Devils season, Missing playoffs might be healthy for team

It was one of the most controversial and bizarre off-seasons in NHL history when Ilya Kovalchuk signed what appeared to be one of the most lucrative contracts in NHL history for 17 years and $102 million. But, when the league rejected that contract, the backlash started. There was an arbitration hearing and an amending of the current collective bargaining agreement (CBA). Also, the Devils ended up getting fined $3 million dollars, losing a 3rd rounder in 2011 draft and must surrender a 1st rounder in any of the next 4 drafts. Not to mention the Devils traded away Johnny Oduya, Niclas Bergfors, prospect Patrice Cormier and a 1st rounder in 2010, so there are more losses in the process.

Kovalchuk's former team the Atlanta Thrashers are on a roll now, mainly due to the fact they overhauled their roster and brought Stanley Cup winning experience from Chicago in Dustin Byfuglien, Ben Eager, Andrew Ladd, and Brent Sopel. It seems that most Thrasher fans have already forgotten about Kovalchuk. Bergfors has been struggling, but is producing at about the same rate as Kovy has been with the Devils thus far. Kovalchuk himself is struggling with 5 goals and 6 assists and a -17 rating this year, his worst in his 10 year career.

On top of that the saga is also backfiring in the sense that it limited the time the Devils had to clear cap space, but the Salvador injury gave the Devils the relief they needed. In fact, most reports were indicating that Lamoriello was preparing to trade Salvador if it were not for the injury. Salvador is still on light workouts with no timetable to return. There was no indication that Lamoriello was attempting to even clear the cap space as no team was prepared to take on any salary from the Devils. Most of the contracts like Rolston, White and Langenbrunner have no trade clauses, which are usually tough to move, and the fear of being traded is translating into the game on the ice with most of the players who might have been moved struggling. The saga has created distractions on the ice, locker room, practice and the way MacLean coaches. MacLean remains on thin life support, but indications are that he will coach at least the next two games and most likely further than that. Many believe that Lou Lamoriello will decide on MacLean once he gets everyone healthy and the cap straightened out. But, by mid February, when all of that is expected to happen, it will already be late and there will be a lost season.

So, this is another reason why it might not hurt the Devils to miss the playoffs as next summer hopefully there would be no saga, just trying to sign Parise to a contract extension. But, yet again, a missed playoff year would not benefit the Devils chances of signing him to a new deal as the team has not gone past the first round since 2007, when they defeated a John Tortorella coached Tampa Bay Lightning team in 6 games. But, at least there would be less distractions. Two teams the Devils could learn from is the 2008-2009 Montreal Canadiens, who went through their in-season turmoil and the 2006-2007 Flyers, who finished 29/30 in the league and went to the conference finals the following year but fell to the Penguins. Both teams entered their respective season's with high expectations. Montreal went to the conference finals last year, but fell to the Flyers. Therefore, the Devils could learn more from missing the playoffs, than from getting eliminated from round one in consecutive years.

Lamoriello still standing by coach John MacLean, but for how much longer

Devils GM Lou Lamoriello is still at the Board of Governors meeting in West Palm Beach, Florida, but he has already spoke to coach John MacLean since the team lost to Pittsburgh last night 2-1. Lamoriello was disappointed about the loss, but did not elaborate any further or tell MacLean he was relieved of his duties. So, for now MacLean is still the coach and probably will remain the coach for the time being.

Lamoriello has given no indication of any changes that might or will be made, which is typical of the Devils GM. Now, maybe a coaching change will be made, but it seems like the BOG meeting in Florida has saved MacLean's job for now. The Devils play in Ottawa on Friday night and home to Detroit on Saturday night, which would leave 3 days off before next Wednesday's game against Phoenix at home. This could be enough time to evaluate the team and make a possible coaching change or trade to improve the teams struggling offense.

For now, the Devils have to endure the struggle and it seems that Lamoriello still believes in the player personnel he has. While the playoffs are still a few months away, the Devils chances are very little, so it seems as Lou Lamoriello believes that change or no change will not do the team any good. We shall see what happens, but the playoffs for the Devils this year is likely/officially out of question.

Should the Devils miss the playoffs, it will be the first time since 1996 that they have done so. They have made the playoffs 13 straight years since and 15 out of the lat 16 years, a great accomplishment with 3 Stanley Cups. In fact, the Devils are in danger of possibly finishing with the worst record in the NHL, but as many around the league will tell you, they absolutely deserve this type of season, because of the things that transpired over the summer with the Kovalchuk contract. Finishing 30 out 30 would guarantee the Devils a top 5 pick in the first round of the June Entry Draft assuming Lou Lamoriello would not surrender the pick. Lamoriello has to give up a 1st round pick in any of the next 4 drafts, but it is unlikely to happen in June since that would leave him without a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd round pick, but you never know Lou. The punishment stemmed from the rejected Kovalchuk 17 year deal worth $102 million. But, as the most of the teams that won the cup since the lockout, their success has stemmed from having top 5 picks before the lockout, so it might not hurt the Devils to miss the playoffs and start from scratch.

MacLean on life support as Devils coach after 2-1 loss to Penguins, offense continues to sleep

The only positive from tonight's game is that the road power play scored the lone Devils goal, but it was not enough to beat the explosive Penguins. The Penguins could have won this game 5-1 or more, but goals from Sidney Crosby and Chris Kunitz were enough to beat the Devils. Brian Rolston scored the lone Devils goal, but again the offense slept from then on.

The Devils are now 8-17-2, with very little chance to turn things around, but the season much like coach John MacLean is on life support with the Devils 13 points out of the 8th spot. If the Devils are going to have any hope, they have to be at most 4-8 points out by January 1st, which is a very up hill climb.

Jamie Langenbrunner believes changes will be made between now and Friday in Ottawa with three days in between. Langenbrunner is among those which could be traded and speculation has aroused about a possible trade with the Toronto Maple Leafs or NY Islanders, both teams with some cap space to work with. Lou Lamoriello is currently in West Palm Beach, Florida with the Board of Governors meetings going on there, but will not return to his office in New Jersey until Wednesday, but he could do his job by phone. So, players and coaching staff could witness changes in the coming days.

John MacLean continues to deflect questions about his job security which could ultimately be answered sometime in the next day or two. It will be an interesting 72 hours with the Devils, but for now the Devils have to savor whatever is left of their season.

Struggling and Desperate Devils getting set to face highly explosive Penguins in MacLean's possible last stand as coach, Guerin retires

In a match-up which traditionally should feature two NHL powerhouses instead would be a game between a desperate Devils team and a highly octane Penguins squad. Last year these two teams were headed in the same direction, but this year the Devils are in a free fall. Tonight's game could be John MacLean's last stand as Devils coach should they lose with three days off between now and the Ottawa game on Friday night at Ottawa. So, it could give the new coach time to work some practices with the Devils.

The Penguins have won 9 straight games, most recently a 7-2 rout of the Columbus Blue Jackets, and they might put up a similar thumping on division rival Devils tonight. So, the Devils have to play with fear and desperation if they want to have any chance to finally right the sinking ship and get back into a fight for the 7th or 8th spot in the playoffs, which is where they will likely finish based on how things look right now.

The Devils changed up the lines by moving Tedenby to the fourth line with Gionta and Pelley and moved Zubrus to the Right Wing with Elias and Arnott. Zubrus should provide space for Elias or Arnott, but it only might be a temporary fix.

-------

Former Devils winger Bill Guerin announced his retirement this morning and will be honored before tonight's game against the Penguins. Guerin won two Stanley Cups with New Jersey and Pittsburgh. He also played for Edmonton, Boston, Dallas, St. Louis, New York Islanders, San Jose. Guerin served as the Islanders captain from 2007-2009 before being traded and winning the cup with the Penguins. Guerin failed to make the Flyers in training camp this fall. In 1263 career games he has 429 goals and 427 assists and 856 points.

What would have been of Devils season had Kovalchuk scored against Dallas on opening night?

This is a short post, but after all the negativity this year which has shadowed the Devils team, we can only think but not forget what happened on opening night when the Devils jumped to a quick 2-0 lead. Things seemed destined for domination and possibly being a top 5 NHL team this year, but instead it has been a season in turmoil. It was an Ilya Kovalchuk shot which seemed headed for a 3-0 lead against Dallas, but instead it was a post hit that lead to a Dallas goal seconds later. Had the Devils stopped play at a whistle, the refs could have looked at the non-goal, but instead disaster struck and the Devils lost in overtime 4-3.

Maybe, had Kovalchuk scored that goal, the Devils would feel inspired and probably winning at a fast pace, but instead now there are more questions with no possible answers in sight. The Devils are very fragile psychologically and mentally right now and must only rely on hope they can turn things around. Simply, put every game in December and most of the games in January are must wins for the Devils otherwise they can definitely forget about the playoffs. Most Devils fans including myself partially have accepted failure for them thus year, but let's just hope the team has not. So, again what could have been had Kovalchuk scored to make it 3-0 against Dallas?

Time continuing to run out on Devils season after 5-3 loss to Flyers

The Flyers today proved why they are one of the NHL Elite offensive teams by playing poorly for most of the game, but still managed to win. But, the Devils who played hard fell short despite outnumbering the Flyers in almost every stat category except for shots and the score. The only positive was that Ilya Kovalchuk finally scored on a power play and the power play itself was 2 for 3 to day on the road, which only scored once before tonight's game. The Devils are one of the worst power play teams in the league this season.

The Flyers got goals from James van Riemsdyk, Claude Giroux, Mike Richards, Danny Briere and Jeff Carter added an empty netter. Giroux's goal 58 seconds into the second changed the complexion of the game. The Devils had two one goal leads in the game, a 1-0 and a 2-1 lead before Giroux scored and gave the Flyers a spark. Travis Zajac and Patrik Elias scored the other two goals for the Devils. The Devils scored their 3rd goal to come within one 19:16 into the 3rd period, but it was too late. Even a missed penalty call frustrated the Devils, but it likely would not have done them any good since only 10 or so seconds were left.

So, John MacLean's job status is still in the air, though with only one day off between now and Monday against Pittsburgh is not enough for a new coach to settle down and conduct practice. So, a decision on MacLean will not come until after the Pittsburgh game. The Devils will visit Consol Energy Center for the first time this season and franchise history, so they would want to get revenge on the Penguins who beat them 3-1 in an earlier match-up this season at Prudential Center. All, we know right now is that the Devils are in severe jeopardy of missing the playoffs for the first time since 1996, the year after they won the Stanley Cup for the first time in franchise history.

What coaches are in danger of being fired in NHL?

For now John MacLean is still the coach of the New Jersey Devils, but for how much longer? Let's take a look at NHL coaches on the hot seat and who might be a viable replacement for them if the change is made in the middle of the season. Usually an in-season change means that the replacement has to come from the minors or anyone who is unemployed. So, I will post the 3 top candidates for each team.

John MacLean (New Jersey Devils)
-Ken Hitchcock (former Stars, Flyers and Blue Jackets coach)
-Andy Murray (former Kings and Blues coach)
-Bob Hartley (former Avalanche and Thrashers coach)

Ron Wilson (Toronto Maple Leafs)
-Ken Hitchcock
-Andy Murray
-Greg Gilbert (Toronto Marlies Coach and former Flames coach)

Cory Clouston (Ottawa Senators)
-Bryan Murray (current Sens GM, so Interim basis)
-Andy Murray
-Kurt Kleinendorst (Sens minor league coach)

Brent Sutter (Calgary Flames)
-Ken Hitchcock
-Bill Barber (former Flyers coach)
-John Anderson (former Thrashers coach)

Devils facing similar situation to 2008-2009 Montreal Canadiens

If there is anything to learn upon for the New Jersey Devils this season, they can look back and learn from what the 2008-2009 Montreal Canadiens went through that season. The Canadiens finished first in the eastern conference in 2007-2008 and expectations were very high for them in 2008-2009, but they started the season very well and in January things started to free fall. Carey Price started to severely struggle, players were not getting along, Ryan O'Byrne scored an own empty net goal, they faced key injuries to Chris Higgins, Andrei Markov, Mike Komisarek, then captain Saku Koivu, and even Carey Price as well as Alex Tanguay.

The Habs fired coach Guy Carbonneau during winter 2009, but still continued to struggle under interim coach Bob Gainey. So, in summer of 2009 the Habs blew up the roster and opted not to re-sign their free agents an let those who caused the turmoil leave. Higgins was traded for Scott Gomez, Koivu went to Anaheim, Komisarek signed with the rival Leafs, Tanguay went to Tampa Bay. The Canadiens revamped their roster and even though the regular season was a struggle for them, they still managed a magical playoff run.

It might be time for the Devils to think about it this year. The Habs did make the playoffs that year as an 8th seed, but were swept by the Bruins in Round 1. But, the Devils now 11 points out of the 8th seed, it is a huge hole to climb out of. They might want to revert to the end of 2005-2006 season where they won 11 straight games to finish out the year, but its not looking that promising this year with all the goal scoring problems. Next year, Jason Arnott is the only known Unrestricted Free Agent, so its unlikely he will be back and the Devils might want to trade some of the players you would think they would not want to trade like a Colin White and Brian Rolston. Also, captain Jamie Langenbrunner is an unrestricted free agent, but with the way he's been playing, he will not be brought back, but if Lou is that in love with him, he might bring him back. Simply put, the Devils need a culture change and maybe Lou himself should step aside from his General Manager duties and remain team CEO only.

Devils take massive step back after 5-1 loss to Canadiens, Brian Gionta beats brother Stephen

After a week with a 3-1 record, the Devils though they had turned the corner and finally could get back into their long journey to being a playoff contender. However, after tonight, that path just got a whole lot longer. The Canadiens scored 5 goals in less than 30 minutes of play into the game and never looked back as they routed the Devils 5-1 at Prudential Center. Ex Devils Brian Gionta and Scott Gomez scored for the Habs along with Tom Pyatt, Lars Eller, and Benoit Pouliot. Jason Arnott scored for the Devils for his team leading 9th of the season.

So, it looks like the 4 day break killed any momentum the Devils had riding, but any is definitely a lot of momentum. The Devils had a 2 minute 5 on 3 in the end of the 2nd, but generated very little on it. Coach John MacLean felt like benching half of the team, but ended up juggling lines. Johan Hedberg was pulled less than three minutes into the game after the Habs jumped to a quick 2-0 lead and Mike McKenna did not fare any better, though the only positive was stopping the penalty shot by Tomas Plekanec. Stephen Gionta was invisible in a match-up which pitted him against his brother and Canadiens captain Brian Gionta.

Now, the question is, with the lack of scoring, should Lou Lamoriello break the ice and shake up his team? The answer is up to him, but many feel the Devils need a spark and with the Holiday Roster/Trade freeze coming up, it might be time for the Devils to make a move and it could very well be a trade including a coaching change. Nobody knows, but the past 4 games could be a good indication that changes are needed. The Devils need puck moving defensemen and a quality center to play alongside Ilya Kovalchuk, who is having a disastrous year with no signs of exploding for goals. We shall see what happens, but with tonight's loss, the Devils have taken a massive step back.

After emotional few days, Devils set focus on Canadiens

It has been an emotional roller coaster for the Devils in the past 48-96 hours. On Saturday morning, Patrik Elias Welcomed a baby daughter named Sophia Gabriella. Following that, the Devils defeated the Flyers in the shootout. Yesterday the entire Devils organization attended the funeral for former coach Pat Burns in Montreal. In fact, most of the hockey world was at the funeral along with obviously his family. The NHL hierarchy was there with Commissioner Gary Bettman and Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly. Also on hand were Leafs GM Brian Burke, former Devils, Canadiens and current Bruins coach Claude Julien, former Habs coach Jacques Demers, former NHLers Luc Robitaille, Ray Bourque, Guy Carbonneau, Kirk Muller, Patrik Roy and current Habs and former Devils Brian Gionta and Scott Gomez. Scotty Bowman was there as well along with most of the Habs organization like owner Geoff Molson and Bob Gainey and Pierre Gauthier.

Now, the Devils must focus on continuing their turnaround this season, which they hoped started last week in which they went 3-1. The Devils face the Montreal Canadiens at Prudential Center on Thursday and then a rematch against the Flyers in Philadelphia on Saturday afternoon, so it is another two crucial games for the Devils. Next week, the Devils go to Pittsburgh on Monday and then a back to back in Ottawa next Friday and return home against Detroit on Saturday. So, it will be tough going for them.

Jamie Langenbrunner and Matt Corrente all practiced today with the Devils and both hope to play Thursday. Martin Brodeur (elbow), Jason Arnott (flu) and David Clarkson (Personal) did not practice. Brodeur will not play this week and its very likely he will return next Friday in Ottawa at the earliest.

-------

The Washington Capitals today acquired defenseman Scott Hannan from the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for center Tomas Fleischman. It is a good trade for the Capitals, who need some veteran experience on defense. Fleischman was a healthy scratch a few times this year, but his skill should help the Avalanche in some ways.

Notes: The west is tight and a toss up in my mind as spots 7-13 will be shuffled a lot between now and then. Should be a very interesting race, much more than the east. I will have my awards predictions tomorrow or Wednesday.

Devils starting to get healthy as they enter crucial month of December

In the past few years, the month of December has been easy for the Devils as they usually dominated the opposition and barely struggles through it. However, the case in the past usually attributes to fast starts by the Devils. Now, this is not the case for them as the Devils stand at 8-14-2 and eight points out of the final playoff spot in the east with 24 games played this year. They are facing roster problems with the salary cap and injuries and most importantly a terrible record. So, the month of December will be very instrumental to them and could decide the fate of their season.

Many hockey analysts usually predict a teams fate for the year once the calender strike January 1st of the new year. It is very safe to say as I have mentioned in my previous posts, that the Devils cannot afford more than 2-4 losses this month. They need to build a string of five to eight straight wins and this will likely get them out of their funk and get them back into being the team they are accustomed to being, which is playoff or even cup contender.

The turnaround, which the Devils and their fans hope finally began last week might be getting more sweeter this week when Jamie Langenbrunner is expected to return along with Martin Brodeur. Langenbrunner has skated on his own last week, but will practice tomorrow with the team. This could mean that someone is going back to Albany and it could be Vasyunov or Gionta. Brodeur is not expected to practice tomorrow, but Wednesday is a small possibility. He definitely likes to play against Montreal, but without practicing at least two days, Montreal might not be possible for him.

Bryce Salvador rode the stationary bike today, so its a small step for him in his recovery. He did not comment on any timetables for his return. Salvador as of two weeks ago was still not cleared to begin off-ice workouts or even lift any weights, so the bike might only be light workouts. It seems that his return is probably anywhere from mid January-late February. Mark Fraser is now in a small cast and hopes to begin skating this week on his own. Corrente had a sore neck and hopes to play on Thursday. Jacob Josefson and Zach Parise are still on a longer mend and Matt Taormina is week to week. So, we shall see what happens. The Devils are getting healthy, which is always good.

Devils taking baby steps to get back into playoff race

After an 0-3 road trip with all devastating losses, it seemed obvious that changes were coming and that possibly a coaching change would be made, but after a 3-1 record this past week, the Devils are finally taking baby steps to get back into the playoff race. December is usually not a month to start talking about playoffs, but for the Devils they need a good December and January in order to get back to being the playoff contender they are accustomed to being. They started by finishing November off on a high note with a 5-0 win over Washington and a couple of 2-1 shootout wins over the Flames and Flyers. There was that one blemish on Friday against the Islanders.

Now comes the do or die months of December and January, because simply put some of the upper echelon teams like the Capitals, Flyers and Penguins in the east and Red Wings, Sharks, Canucks and Hawks in the west will look to secure playoff births in those months. The Devils are so used to being included amongst those teams, but it might not be the case come March for them as they will likely be fighting for the final four spots in the eastern conference. After an 0-5-2 start at home this year, the Devils have now won 4 straight on home ice and with a win on Thursday against Montreal can get to the .500 mark at home. Now, they have to establish consistency on the road even though their next road game is against the explosive Flyers next Saturday at 1 PM ET.

The big key for the Devils now is to get Ilya Kovalchuk out of his slump. If they cannot with their current players, then Lou might have to try to get a center who can develop chemistry with him. So, we will see what the Devils are made off this month as they await the possible returns of Josefson, Salvador, Salmela and Langenbrunner and possibly Taormina from injury, which might force Lou to make some moves.
