Elias Hat-Trick Powers Devils to 4-2 pride win over Flyers

After escaping Wednesday with a 3-2 win over the Islanders, the Devils probably played one of their few best offensive games with a 4-2 win over Philadelphia. Patrik Elias scored 3 goals and Nick Palmieri scored the other one to lead the Devils to a win. Shots were 36-24 Flyers in the effort, so not the best defensive output by the Devils. Johan Hedberg made 34 saves in a rare start. James van Riemsdyk and Jeff Carter scored for the Flyers. Anton Volchenkov returned to the Devils line-up after missing the last 2 games with a lower body injury. Colin White remained out.

The Devils are now 10 points out of the playoff spot, but can only tie for the 8th spot in points if they win their remaining games. The Rangers and Sabres have to lose their remaining games and not gain a single point. Other teams cannot win more than 1 game which are ahead of the Devils, but slightly behind the Rangers and Sabres. The virtue that will propel the Devils to the playoffs is that they would have more non-shootout wins than the Rangers. Either way, the Devils are playing for pride at the moment and are aiming to finish the year strong.
