Canucks show no signs of fatigue after epic 7 game series vs Chicago, shutout Nashville 1-0 in Game 1

You would thing after an emotional Game 7 victory less than 48 hours before Game 1 vs Nashville would cause fatigue and a letdown, it sure did not look like it last night. The Canucks came out flying against Nashville and full credit to coach Alain Vigneault. Vigneault probably calmed team down after emotional Game 7 in Round 1. Instead, the Game was a case of rest vs rust. The Predators had 4 days off while the Canucks picked up where they left off. Luongo made 20 saves in the 1-0 shutout. Chris Higgins scored the lone goal of the game.

Higgins was a deadline acquisition by GM Mike Gillis from Florida. Former Higgins Habs teammate Maxim Lapierre assisted on the goal. Game 2 is this Saturday evening at the same time before shifting the Nashville. Tonight is Capitals vs Lightning and Sharks-Red Wings.

With playoffs over for Habs, Blackhawks, Haviland and Muller are expected to interview for Devils coaching position

Now that Round One is over, expect many assistants of various eliminated teams in the playoffs to be interviewed for Head Coaching vacancies. One vacancy is the New Jersey Devils, who have not yet began their coaching search, but are expected to do so in the coming month of May. Two most notable names are Blackhawks assistant Mike Haviland and Canadiens assistant Kirk Muller. Both coaches would become first year Head Coaches in the NHL if one or both are hired. My guess is that Muller will definitely be a Head Coach somewhere in 2011-2012. Two teams linked to his name are the Devils and Dallas Stars since he has had past connections to those two teams.

Haviland is also a future coach, but the question is when. He is a New Jersey resident in the offseason and has had small connections with the Devils organization. He was heavily interested in the Devils coaching vacancy before the job went to John MacLean. However, MacLean was a first year coach and that experiment failed worse than failure itself. So, the Devils are likely to go with experience unless Lou Lamoriello sees something in Muller or Haviland he did not see in John MacLean. Muller is close friends with MacLean, so Haviland might have a slight edge over him for NJ.

I think Muller will end up in Dallas with MacLean as a possible assistant. Both however will get looks in NJ by Lamoriello, but I think Ken Hitchcock, Andy Murray and Michel Therrien are the front runners in NJ. Haviland is also expected to generate interest from the Florida Panthers due to his connections with former Blackhawks GM and Current Panthers GM Dale Tallon. Other vacancies are Minnesota and Ottawa. Neither of the five vacancies are expected to be filled until we draw closer to the conclusion of the playoffs, so early June at the earliest.

NHL Playoffs: Round 2 Preview

East:

Washington Capitals vs Tampa Bay Lightning

The Capitals were off since Saturday and Tampa just won their Game 7 against Pittsburgh. So, here we go, a Southeast division rivalry in Round 2. This series will be a long one in my mind. Dwayne Roloson will have to be just as big against the Caps as he was against Pittsburgh.

Offense: Capitals

Defense: Even

Goaltending: Even

Intangibles: Capitals

Prediction: Capitals in 6

Philadelphia Flyers vs Boston Bruins

As if we don't know what happened last year, well this is the Bruins shot at redemption. There are many questions for both teams, but the Bruins special teams will have to be exponentially better against Philadelphia, who take advantage of their special teams to get them goals. The Bruins last year blew a 3-0 series lead against Philadelphia as well as a 3-0 lead in Game 7, well now the series will start in Philly, but does this give Boston an edge. This series will be a major war.

Offense: Flyers

Defense: Even

Goaltending: Bruins

Intangibles: Flyers

Prediction: Bruins in 7

West:

Vancouver Canucks vs Nashville Predators

Vancouver gets a quick turnaround, less than 48 hours after a classic Game 7 win over their demons, the Hawks, they are back to take on the Nashville Predators. The Preds just won their first ever playoff series and are 2-2 against Vancouver during the regular season. The Canucks are still going through the emotional roller coaster from last night, so they just have to weather a few early storms tomorrow night.

Offense: Canucks

Defense: Even

Goaltending: Canucks (slight edge)

Intangibles: Even

Prediction: Canucks in 6

San Jose Sharks vs Detroit Red Wings

Another rematch from Round 2 of last year. The Sharks won in 5 games last season, but the Wings were not as deep and were more fatigued last year after two straight Cup Final Trips in 08 and 09. This series will be much different and defense and special teams will decide it.

Offense: Even

Defense: Red Wings

Goaltending: Red Wings

Intangibles: Even

Prediction: Red Wings in 6 or 7

Canucks-Blackhawks series will be a Classic to remember, but Canucks survive the scare

Game 7 was a classic in the Vancouver-Chicago series and probably a more classic ending. The Canucks had a 1-0 lead all the way down to the end of the the 3rd, when Hawks captain Jonathan Toews used his will power to score a short-handed goal with under 2 minutes left in regulation to send the game into overtime. Yes, a short-handed goal late in the game. Corey Crawford though was the 1st star of the game as he kept the Hawks in the game.

However, the Hawks comeback fell short after Alexander Burrows redeemed himself from a missed penalty shot and an early penalty in overtime with a slapper to win the series for the Canucks. So, as I said this series was a classic, but I think this win for Vancouver gives them full shades of confidence they would need to go further into the playoffs, but it was a huge scare. Roberto Luongo also stood tall for Vancouver after a shaky Games 4 and 5. Luongo made a game and series saving stop on Patrick Sharp on the Hawks power play in OT.

Blackhawks look to be 2nd team in 2 years to comeback from 3-0 deficit tomorrow, plus thoughts on first 10 days of playoffs and look ahead to Round 2

Could it happen again? The Vancouver Canucks, the best team in the NHL during the regular season were well on their way to exorcising their playoff demons, the Chicago Blackhawks, who have knocked them out of the playoffs the past two years. They had a 3-0 series lead and played a good 1st period in Game 4, but in the 2nd period things turned south for the Canucks. Dave Bolland's return from injury for Chicago was exactly what the doctor ordered and the Hawks began to play like the team that won the cup last year.

Jonathan Toews became the caliber player he was during last year's playoffs and Duncan Keith is rediscovering his Norris Trophy touch the past three games. Corey Crawford is finally beginning to be the goalie the Hawks envisioned after his big saves in Game 5 in Vancouver, a 5-0 shutout of the Canucks in Game 5 for Chicago. If the Hawks win Game 7 in Vancouver, they would be the 2nd team in two years to overcome a 3 love deficit. The Flyers did it last year in Boston and they trailed 3-0 in Game 7 before Flyer coach Peter Laviolette called a critical time-out. That momentum carried the Flyers into the Finals before falling in 6 games against these Blackhawks.

Last Night in Game 6, the Canucks shockingly went with Cory Schneider in goal as oppose to Vezina trophy candidate Roberto Luongo. Schneider suffered what appeared to be a severe groin injury after failing to stop Michael Frolik's penalty shot, which he scored on in the 3rd period. He was pulled in favor of Luongo, but the Hawks won in Overtime on Ben Smith's winner. Now the pressure is on Vancouver, and I said this series was going 7 games and I am sticking with the Canucks, but it will be a difficult task tomorrow. They need two quick goals.

If Vancouver loses, expect massive changes starting with coach Vigneault and GM Mike Gillis. Flags could be flying at half-staff should the Canucks fall tomorrow. In my opinion, if the Canucks win Game 7, it would be very good for them since they can get rid of adversity that many teams in the playoffs sometimes need. We shall see tomorrow.

--------

In other thoughts, well the Capitals as expected closed out the Rangers on Saturday in Washington. The turning point was Game 4 at MSG, where the Rangers blew a 3-0 lead in the 3rd and lost it on a Gaborik's gaffe in double overtime.

The Detroit Red Wings, also as expected swept the Phoenix Coyotes in what could be the Coyotes last game in Phoenix. The franchise is expected to move back to Winnipeg and become the Jets if the NHL fails to find a buyer to keep them in Phoenix and right now it is not looking good.

The Nashville Predators finally won a playoff series last night against Anaheim as they will smell Round 2 for the first time in History.

I will continue to blog everyday from now on.

Canucks getting closer to getting monkey of their back

The Canucks could be thinking sweep tomorrow night in Chicago and finally exorcising their playoff demons. Chicago has eliminated the Canucks from the playoffs the past two years, but Vancouver took a commanding 3-0 lead against the Blackhawks last night with a 3-2 victory on the road in Chicago. The Red Wings were the last Defending Stanley Cup Champion to be swept out of the playoffs in Round 1 in 2003 after winning the cup in 2002. The Hawks will certainly look to prevent it from happening, but it was a statement win last night.

Elsewhere, Carey Price continues to shine in the playoffs as the Habs are heading home up 2-0 against the heavily favored Bruins. The Capitals dropped a close one against the Rangers yesterday 3-2, but still hold a 2-1 series lead. Nashville leads Anaheim 2 games to 1 as well. The Sharks and Kings head to Los Angeles all knotted up at 1 game a piece and so is Tampa and Pittsburgh heading to Florida along with Buffalo and Philadelphia.

Price, Gionta, Ryan Miller shine in night 2 of NHL Playoffs

Carey Price of the Montreal Canadiens finally redeemed himself in the playoffs by shutting out the heavily favored Boston Bruins 2-0 in Game 1 of their playoff series. Price made 31 saves to out duel his dominant nemesis Tim Thomas. Brian Gionta had both goals for the Habs and Gomez had two assists after a disappointing regular season.

Ryan Miller of Buffalo made 35 saves in a 1-0 shutout win over another East powerhouse the Philadelphia Flyers. Patrick Kaleta had the Sabres goal. Looks like we are in for some long series in Round 1.

Capitals draw first blood vs Rangers win 2-1 in OT.

It was a psychological game, but it ended brightly for the team that did not play psychological hockey. Alexander Semin on a pass from former Devil Jason Arnott scored for the Capitals late in the first overtime to seal a 2-1 win. Matt Gilroy gave the Rangers a 1-0 lead in Period 3 before Alexander Ovechkin tied it up late in the 3rd. Henrik Lundqvist played mind games with the Capitals, but that did not faze the team in red.

Game 2 in Friday night at 7:30, but Game 1 proved it will be a 6-7 game series. Lundqvist made 31 saves on 33 shots and Michal Neuvirth made 24 on 25 shots. Neuvirth's glove continues to be lightning quick. Hopefully he does not crumble under the pressure, but expect the Capitals to ride three goaltenders in the playoffs. That being Neuvirth, Braden Holtby, and Simeon Varlamov. It is the Caps first win vs the Rangers in Washington this year.

Capitals lead series 1-0.

Devils win draft lottery, move up to select 4th overall, Oilers to select 1st overall for 2nd straight year

The New Jersey Devils 2011 offseason of redemption got off on the right foot by winning the NHL Draft Lottery, but they will not choose 1st overall due to NHL rules. By finishing with the 8th worst record in the NHL, the Devils can only move up 4 spots at the maximum, so they will choose 4th overall in the 2011 Entry Draft in St. Paul, Minnesota in late June. Lou Lamoriello announced the Devils will not surrender the pick as part of the Kovalchuk penalty meaning that they will have to surrender a 1st round pick in either 2012 through 2014 Entry Drafts.

The Edmonton Oilers will select #1 overall for the second straight year. Last year they took Taylor Hall with the pick. There is not clear cut favorite for the number one pick this year though many believe it will be either Red Deer Rebels forward Ryan Nugent-Hopkins of the Western Hockey League in Canada or Swedish Elite League defenseman Adam Larssen. Swedish forward Gabriel Landeskog who plays for the Kitchener Rangers of the Ontario Hockey League in Canada could also be thrown into the mix.

The Devils last highest pick was in 1991, when they chose Scott Niedermayer 3rd overall. Many believe the Devils should draft a puck moving defenseman or a play making forward. Lou Lamoriello has been known to trade up or down in round 1 of the draft and it would not surprise me if he trades up or down this year. If he wants Larssen due to the Devils track record of drafting Swedish players in round 1, he could move up, but if they want a guy like Ryan Murphy, they could trade down a few spots if his stock does not rise or fall. Currently, Murphy is ranked at # 7 or 8. Nugent-Hopkins is the best play making forward, but he is likely to be the 31 overall pick. Sean Couturier of Drumondville of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League is the other logical choice for the Devils even though his stock is falling, but it is expected to level out. He is expected to go top 5.

4th overall is not bad for the Devils, and I think this pick will be a good marketing tool along with Parise and Kovalchuk sometime in the near future. It was reported that the Devils are doing very well in 2011-2012 season ticket sales, so that is a positive sign for the franchise as they sold and have reserved almost 1200 season ticket packages. This despite missing the playoffs, but looks like Kovalchuk is definitely putting fans into the seats and their late season almost miracle run.

No Timetable for Devils to hire new coach, but here are top 5 candidates

GM Lou Lamoriello gave a familiar answer pertaining to the hiring of a new coach, there is no timetable, but with Lou there never is one. However, I do not expect the Devils to have a coach before the Cup Final is over and possibly the draft or beginning of free agency. Lamoriello continues to say that free agency and the draft will not affect his search for a new coach. But, even if there is a coach before the draft and free agency, this search will be a lengthy and careful one as Lou might have rushed too quickly to hire MacLean in June 2010. My belief is that Lou will hire an experienced coach, but if it is a first time coach, it has to be the right guy. Here are the top 5 candidates in no particular order.

Ken Hitchcock

-In terms of teaching and experience, he might be the favorite, however he does have tendencies of breaking up his relationships with the players. He did lead Columbus into the playoffs for the first time in their history, but was fired in the middle of last season after about two years on the job. Hitch also lead the Stars to the 1999 Stanley Cup. He might not be the long-term stability the Devils could be looking for in a coach, but his defensive philosophy might give him a good inside track on the job. Plus, he is good friends with Lamoriello and Martin Brodeur and his international experience might suit his resume well.

Andy Murray

-He could be a coach which is similar to Jacques Lemaire in his defensive approach. However, he has not had much playoff success in his tours with Los Angeles and St. Louis, but he does preach an aggressive fore-check and speed something the Devils have lacked this year. There have been many calls for him to be the coach of the Devils, but he is definitely a top candidate.

Michel Therrien

-There were many rumors last May and June that Therrien was offered the Devils coaching job before it went to MacLean, but that never happened. He might have been the runner-up to the job. But, he currently works with the Wild organization and with today's firing of Todd Richards, he could be the leading candidate for that job. However, the Devils have a track record of luring former Habs coaches and he is one of them, so I expect him to be at the top of the list as well. He might not be the most popular choice, but the coaching profession is not a popularity contest.

Kirk Muller

-He is likely to be one of the top two candidates for the position with no head coaching experience in the NHL, however he is also a former Devil and current Habs assistant, who might do a better job than MacLean. However, it is a huge risk with Kirk, but he certainly deserves serious consideration for any coaching position in the NHL. I expect that if Marc Crawford is let go in Dallas, Muller would be the leading candidate there and maybe even the Wild vacancy.

Mike Haviland

-If there is another first time coach in Jersey, he is the favorite. He has spent many years as the Blackhawks assistant and has coached the Hawks for a few games while head coach Joel Quenneville recovered from Ulcers. I believe he will receive serious consideration from Lou and he is a Jersey resident, so he would certainly like to be the coach. Plus, he was hoping to be the Devils coach before the job went to John MacLean. I also think he will be a top candidate for the Panthers coaching vacancy due to the relationship with former Hawks GM Dale Tallon. Mike Kitchen and John Torchetti will also be favorites for Devils and Panthers jobs.

Others:

Guy Carbonneau
Mike Kitchen
John Torchetti
Paul MacLean
Brad McCrimmon
Marc Habscheid
Mike Eaves
Trent Yawney
Jay Woodcroft
Matt Shaw
Bob Boughner

Rivalries, Re-matches headline Round 1 of NHL Playoffs

It will be sad not having the New Jersey Devils part of the 2011 NHL Playoffs, but there is no reason why these playoffs will not be interesting. After all, round 1 will sing a familiar tune as rivalries such as the Bruins, Sharks and Kings, and Canadiens and Canucks and Blackhawks will renew their acquaintances in the playoffs. Also rematches like the Coyotes and Red Wings followed by Rangers and Capitals will also sing the same song.

The Coyotes had home ice advantage against the Red Wings last year, but Detroit went into the playoffs on a high note and their experience helped them prevail. Rule number one of the playoffs, the Wings are always a top Cup Favorite and I think if healthy, they will be a force and menace to anyone in their sight.

San Jose and Los Angeles might be in-state rivals, but this is probably the least intriguing of them. I think San Jose has finished the year strong and will definitely make a run at the Cup, after all they have the Stanley Cup winning goalie in Antti Niemi. But, their focus right now is the Kings and I believe that not being favored out west will certainly help their cause. I expect a big playoff from Joe Thornton.

Now to Vancouver and Chicago. The Canucks probably will not have much sleep from now until Wednesday, because the demons of Chicago from the last two years still haunt them. The Canucks had chances to eliminate the Hawks the last two playoffs, but huge defensive breakdowns and physical match-ups prevented them. But with the Blackhawks trading away players like Dustin Byfuglien, Brent Sopel, Ben Eager, Andrew Ladd and Kris Versteeg, all who have haunted Vancouver the last two years should make it a bit easier of the Canucks to avoid a let down in Round 1. I think Vancouver will prevail in 6 games, but they must win the 1st two at home.

The Capitals and Rangers are familiar foes and probably this is the beginning of their playoff rivalry. Its Alexander Ovechkin vs Henrik Lundqvist again. Lundqvist has won the regular season battle this year, but the Capitals do have the Rangers number in the playoffs. After all in 2009, both teams played a 7 game epic for the ages. The Rangers took a commanding 2-0 series lead by winning the first two in Washington and ultimately won Game 4 at the Garden, but in Game 5 Rangers coach John Tortorella threw a stick into the crowd and was suspended for Game 6, which led to the Rangers collapse and elimination in 7 games. Lundqvist shined in Games 1 & 2 of that series and this year that will be the key again, but NY has to have more of a killer instinct which they lacked in 2009. But, I think the Capitals have the extra motivation this year and know that they need a deep playoff run. Caps in 6 or 7 this year again.

Finally, the best is for last as the Bruins and Habs meet for the 3rd time in 4 years in Round One. Last year, the Canadiens had their magical run into the conference finals against Philadelphia, but fell short. The Habs own the Bruins in the playoffs this decade with victories in 2002, 2004, 2008. But Boston prevailed with a sweep in 2009. This year the rivalry took a nasty turn when Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara lightly checked Habs forward Max Pacioretty into the stantion at the Bell Centre and I expect more major penalties in this series than goals. The Habs won the season series 4-2 and I believe that it will be a long 7 game series. If it is a short series, it favors Boston, a long one will favor Montreal. It will not be a sweep like in 2009, the Canadiens have to steal a game in Boston. Expect major security at the Bell Centre for all the games.

Round One: Western Conference Predictions

I did the East last night, so here are my Western Predictions.

(1) Vancouver Canucks vs (8) Chicago Blackhawks

All I have to say is the team the Canucks least want to face in round 1 is the Chicago Blackhawks. The Blackhawks eliminated the Canucks from the playoffs the last two years and could the third time be the charm for Vancouver. Teams who have won the Presidents Trophy and the league's best record have been known to have a let down in Round 1. Examples: 2000 St. Louis Blues, 2006 Detroit Red Wings, 2009 San Jose Sharks, 2010 Washington Capitals. All years correspond to the playoff numbered years. This series however in my opinion will be long, but I think Luongo is on a mission this year. Canucks have to win the first two though. Here is my breakdown:

Offense: Vancouver

Defense: Chicago

Goaltending: Vancouver

Intangibles: Vancouver

X-Factors: Hjalmarsson for Chicago, Raymond for Vancouver.

Prediction: Canucks in 6

(2) San Jose Sharks vs (7) Los Angeles Kings

The last time the Sharks faced a California team in round 1 was the Anaheim Ducks in 2009, and they had a major letdown losing to the Ducks and a hot Jonas Hiller in 6 games. This time the Kings are the challenge. However, the Kings still have a lot to learn and therefore in my opinion San Jose has been on a roll this past week and I expect that the Sharks will go far into the playoffs.

Offense: San Jose

Defense: Even

Goaltending: San Jose

Intangibles: Los Angeles

X-Factors: Justin Williams for Kings, Devin Setoguchi for Sharks.

Prediction: Sharks in 6

(3) Detroit Red Wings vs (6) Phoenix Coyotes

This is another rematch from the 2010 playoffs, where the Red Wings defeated the Coyotes in 7 games. However, I think despite the injuries to Detroit, I think they will continue to roll in Round 1.

Offense: Detroit

Defense: Detroit

Goaltending: Detroit

Intangibles: Detroit

X-Factors: Darren Helm for Red Wings, Lee Stempniak for Coyotes

Prediction: Red Wings in 6

(4) Anaheim Ducks vs (5) Nashville Predators

This will be a long series in my mind, so I will make it short, it will come down to goaltending and mistakes.

Offense: Even

Defense: Nashville

Goaltending: Nashville

Intangibles: Anaheim

X-Factors: Bobby Ryan for Ducks, Mike Fisher for Predators.

Prediction: Ducks in 7

Post-Mortem: Devils end season on a high note, but face many questions in offseason

The Devils made their fans proud this afternoon as they ended a roller-coaster 2010-2011 Season on a high note. Patrik Elias, Vladimir Zharkov and Alexander Urbom scored for the Devils in a 3-2 win over Boston. It was Urbom's first NHL goal and Zharkov's second. Peverley and Kelly scored for Boston. Johan Hedberg made 24 saves in what could be his last start for the Devils as he might sign with a Southeast Division team for next season or a team that gives him a 2 year deal to give his family stability.

But, now for the sad and fun part of the Devils season. Here is the Post-Mortem:

It was a season which started out with expectations of a run for the Stanley Cup due to Ilya Kovalchuk staying and with Zach Parise as well. However, the summer-long saga of the Kovalchuk contract ended up backfiring on a disappointing start to the season. The Devils went 9-22-2 under new rookie coach John MacLean with absolutely no hope of rebounding. A team which was expected to be explosive offensively ended up being the opposite and that is struggling to score or go to the net or deflect bad angle shots. Kovalchuk struggled badly and really never found a common language with MacLean. Most nights the Devils just did not show up and when they did, the oppositions goaltending stood strong. Even Jason Arnott, who was brought back to the Devils from Nashville struggled under MacLean and was traded to Washington for David Steckel on deadline day. Lou Lamoriello was too patient and was hopeful of a turnaround, but MacLean was fired on December 23rd, 2010 and replaced by Jacques Lemaire, who came in for a 3rd stint with the Devils.

However, the biggest blow to the Devils was the injury to star forward Zach Parise, who tore his meniscus originally in August, but opted to play through it. His struggles were shown as a result of the injury and there-fore in early November opted for surgery and played one game last Saturday before being shut-down for the season. Bryce Salvador not playing at all also affected the Devils defense. Also, lack of puck moving defenseman affected the Devils break-out in their own end. Henrik Tallinder struggled mightily under John MacLean, but became one of the Devils best under Lemaire. Anton Volchenkov was injured for most of the short MacLean era, but was very consistent under Lemaire. However, the largest beneficiary under Lemaire was Ilya Kovalchuk, yes the 15 year $100 million dollar man. His improved defensive play translated into his surging offense. He was able to earn back the fans respect under Lemaire. Young players like Josefson, Tedenby, Zharkov also benefited under Lemaire. The Devils went 29-17-3 under Lemaire as coach and at one point came to within 6 points of the 8th seed in the East after being 27-28 points out. The Devils rose from being the worst defensive team to 9th best in the league. Martin Brodeur and Johan Hedberg turned their games around after having tough times under MacLean.

Here are some of the questions the Devils will face, all of them undoubtedly will be answered depending on how the team performs next year:

Will the Devils sign Parise to a new long-term contract?

-Zach Parise, not Ilya Kovalchuk is the face of the Devils, so I think Lou Lamoriello will waste no time in trying to sign him to a long-term deal and prevent him from entering unrestricted free agency in the summer of 2012. He is priority 1 and 1A and is likely to be named the new Devils captain. However, Lamoriello and the Devils have to be very careful with Parise after what happened with the Kovalchuk saga. It will definitely not be a 15 year deal, but likely a 7-10 year deal with a $6.5-7 million dollar cap hit.

Who will coach the team in 2011-2012?

-Jacques Lemaire made it official after the game as he announced he will not return and go back into retirement. So, once again Lamoriello will have to look carefully in finding a new coach and hopefully this one will be a long-term stay. Brent Sutter has been the longest tenured coach for the Devils since the lockout. As I have stated before the search will be a long one, but the five favorites in no order are Ken Hitchcock, Andy Murray, Kirk Muller, Mike Haviland and Michel Therrien. I do not expect a coach before the Draft, likely in mid-July is when a coach will be named.

Who will back-up Brodeur next season?

-Marty Brodeur made it know he would love to have Hedberg back next season as the fans fell in love with him. But, he also indicated that the Devils should think about the future after Brodeur. But that will be up to Lamoriello and the organization to address that.

Who will the Devils sign in the off-season?

-Parise will be priority 1 and 1A. But, the rest will be based on the amount of cap space the Devils will have left. The Devils biggest need is offensive defensemen, who can help in their struggling transition game and prevent the Devils from spending way too much time in their own end. Also, the Devils can use some size in the front especially on the power play. Expect Lou to address some of these issues in the summer.

Who will make the team next year?

Mattias Tedenby, Jacob Josefson, Adam Henrique, Vladimir Zharkov, Mark Fayne. Other than that its up in the air.

Will the Devils make it back to the playoffs?

-I cannot answer that question, but reverse the win/loss columns under MacLean and things will be much better.

Round One: Eastern Conference Predictions and Match-Ups, Western Conference Tomorrow

I have decided to get a head start on playoff predictions so here they are:

(1) Washington Capitals vs (8) NY Rangers

The Rangers are a decisive 3-1 against the Capitals this year with two lopsided shutout wins by Henrik Lundqvist, a 7-0 win at the Garden and a 6-0 road victory in Washington. However, the Capitals are much more improved and probably are saving most of their energy for a deep playoff run. Both teams have significant injuries or questions in the health department. Washington has Dennis Wideman, Alex Ovechkin, and Mike Green. Rangers have Ryan Callahan and a not 100% Chris Drury. One thing is certain, the Rangers have a significant edge in goaltending with Lundqvist and will only go as far as Lundqvist will take them. Here is my breakdown of the edges:

Offense: Washington

Defense: NY Rangers

Goaltending: NY Rangers

Intangibles: NY Rangers

X-Factor: John Carlson for Capitals, Michael Sauer for Rangers.

Prediction: Capitals in 7

(2) Philadelphia Flyers vs (7) Buffalo Sabres

The Sabres are probably the hottest team going into the playoffs with their unbelievable streak to make sure the Devils and others do not catch up with them. The Flyers have struggled down the stretch and already have goaltending issues with Bobrovsky and Boucher. They did not have a problem last playoff and could take that experience into this year. Buffalo has Ryan Miller, who seems very dialed in despite not being 100% health wise. Goaltending will be the biggest key in this series.

Offense: Philadelphia

Defense: Philadelphia

Goaltending: Buffalo

Intangibles: Buffalo

X-Factor: Ville Leino for Flyers, Nathan Gerbe for Sabres.

Prediction: Sabres in 7

(3) Boston Bruins vs (6) Montreal Canadiens

Here we go again, for the 3rd time in the last 4 years the Montreal Canadiens will face-off against the Boston Bruins in Round One of the Playoffs and this series will be a bloody battle with probably more fights than actual goals scored. The rivalry had many twists and turns this season, the largest being the Zdeno Chara hit on Max Pacioretty of the Habs. The Canadiens are 4-2 vs Boston this season, but the Chara hit might have changed the complexion of the rivalry. But again both teams will go as far as the goaltending of Tim Thomas and Carey Price will take them.

Offense: Boston

Defense: Even

Goaltending: Even

Intangibles: Montreal

X-Factor: Lars Eller for Habs, Rich Peverley for Bruins.

Prediction: Canadiens in 7

(4) Pittsburgh Penguins vs (5) Tampa Bay Lightning

The Lightning are back in the playoffs for the first time since 2007, when they were bounced in 6 by the Devils. The Penguins will meanwhile be without both Crosby and Malkin likely for Round One or early round 1. However, the Penguins have still been successful despite being short-handed most of the year. Marc-Andre Fleury is the key in this series.

Offense: Tampa Bay

Defense: Pittsburgh

Goaltending: Pittsburgh

Intangibles Even

X-Factor Simon Gagne for Lightning, Tyler Kennedy for Pitsburgh

Prediction: Penguins in 6

Devils will look to end (no playoff) season on a high note

It would be very easy for the Devils to tank and lose their remaining four games in the 2010-2011 Regular Season, but this is not expected to be the case. The Devils will aim to play the role of spoiler this week as they can potentially hurt the Maple Leafs and Rangers playoff position. Pittsburgh and Boston might not be hurt by losses to the Devils other than their confidence. Playoff bound teams normally have to end the regular season on a roll to potentially avoid a let down in the playoffs, but the Devils might have a silver lining to make them nervous.

So, the Devils might find comfort in winning their remaining games as they have nothing to lose. After that many questions will follow the Devils and most of those can only be answered by having success next year. However, I will post some of the main questions the Devils will face after Sunday's game against Boston. I expect the Devils will be given a standing ovation send-off into the offseason based on their late season run, which now might only be known as a wasted effort, but that is why you have to win in October, November and December, which the Devils never did under then Head Coach John MacLean, someone who will not be thought fondly off by Devils fans.

We'll see after Sunday, as I will write my Post-Mortem on the Devils.

Its official, no playoffs for Devils after 3-1 loss to Habs at The Rock

For the first time since 1996, the NHL playoffs will not feature one of hockey's most world class organizations in the New Jersey Devils. The Montreal Canadiens officially eliminated the Devils from playoff contention with a 3-1 win at Prudential Center. Mathieu Darche had two goals and P.K. Subban had the other and Carey Price made 20 saves in the win. Ilya Kovalchuk had the lone Devils goal. Also, the loss spoiled Zach Parise's return to the Devils line-up after a 5 month layoff.

The Devils showed major fatigue in the loss after having a hard fought victory over the Flyers the night before. The Canadiens have won both games at Prudential Center this season, while the Devils have won both in Montreal. So, the road team prevailed in each match-up. The Devils have four games remaining and cannot finish with more than 85 points.

So, a season which had high hopes has officially gone down the drain. This is new territory for the Devils, but many questions will follow them after yet another failed season and no after three straight first round exits in the playoffs from 2008-2010 and not having gone past round 2 since winning the cup in 2003, the team has to deal with a missed post-season. Elias Hat-Trick Powers Devils to 4-2 pride win over Flyers

After escaping Wednesday with a 3-2 win over the Islanders, the Devils probably played one of their few best offensive games with a 4-2 win over Philadelphia. Patrik Elias scored 3 goals and Nick Palmieri scored the other one to lead the Devils to a win. Shots were 36-24 Flyers in the effort, so not the best defensive output by the Devils. Johan Hedberg made 34 saves in a rare start. James van Riemsdyk and Jeff Carter scored for the Flyers. Anton Volchenkov returned to the Devils line-up after missing the last 2 games with a lower body injury. Colin White remained out.

The Devils are now 10 points out of the playoff spot, but can only tie for the 8th spot in points if they win their remaining games. The Rangers and Sabres have to lose their remaining games and not gain a single point. Other teams cannot win more than 1 game which are ahead of the Devils, but slightly behind the Rangers and Sabres. The virtue that will propel the Devils to the playoffs is that they would have more non-shootout wins than the Rangers. Either way, the Devils are playing for pride at the moment and are aiming to finish the year strong.
