Devils defenseman Anton Volchenkov received a hard liner from the NHL in a form of a 3 game suspension for his elbow to the head of Hurricanes forward Zack Boychuk. In my view it was a harsh penalty, but this suspension just adds to his bad night last night in the Devils 3-2 overtime victory over the Canes. Carolina had 3 power plays and Volchenkov served all three penalties. He barely played a shift after the 3rd one. Volchenkov is a huge loss for the next 3 games and will miss tomorrow's game against the Leafs, Friday vs Sharks and next Wednesday against these same Hurricanes.
The Devils today completed a minor-league deal with the San Jose Sharks by acquiring defenseman Jay Leach, who played for the Devils in 2008-2009 and forward Steve Zalewski for center Michael Swift and forward Patrick Davis. Davis has one career NHL goal in a game for the Devils last season and Swift has no NHL experience. Both Leach and Zalewski will report to Albany, though do not be surprised of Leach gets the call up. He would not have to clear waivers to go to the Devils. Leach was claimed by Montreal Canadiens last season when he was called up by the Devils, but he had to clear waivers and later in the year was claimed by San Jose, when the Habs no longer needed him. He played very well in 08-09 when he was with Devils.
