Special Teams was the key in tonight's Devils, Panthers game as the Panthers scored a Power Play goal and a shorthanded goal as well as two even-strength ones to get a 4-3 overtime victory over Johan Hedberg and the Devils. Travis Zajac, Jason Arnott and Mark Fayne scored for the Devils while Chris Higgins, Dennis Wideman, Mike Santorelli and Rostislav Olesz for the Panthers. Shots were 31-29 for the Devils, but Ilya Kovalchuk's turnover late in the 3rd on the power play led to the Panthers short-hander which changed the complexion of the game.
Johan Hedberg took the blame for the loss, but the Devils special teams continue to somewhat struggle especially their power play. Also, they have not been sharp defensively and are turning the puck over a lot or spending time in their own end. Next, the Devils head to Montreal to face the Habs on Super Bowl Sunday. But, the Devils managed to get a point and are now 17 points behind the Thrashers, who were idle tonight.
